<p> Wheelchairs and buggies on buses: addressing the potential for conflict between passengers</p><p>Progress report: April 2006</p><p>A literature review was prepared, to provide a context for the research and informs our understanding of:</p><p> The needs of disabled passengers  The perspective of buggy users  International good practice</p><p>Bus companies were approached through the Confederation of Passenger Transport, and three agreed to take part in this research:</p><p>Arriva North West (Merseyside) Stagecoach Scotland (Aberdeen) National Express (Travel West Midlands)</p><p>Interviews were held with drivers and observations were made on buses in all three locations and a report of the findings was presented to the project Steering Group on 3 March.</p><p>A questionnaire was designed in order to assess the nature and scale of the problem from the perspective of disabled passengers. Around 500 copies of the questionnaire were distributed during February through Merseytravel, Centro and the Aberdeen Association of Disabled People</p><p>In order to understand the perspective of buggy users, focus group discussions were held with buggy users in Speke (Merseyside), Walsall (West Midlands) and Aberdeen, also during February. </p><p>Reports of the disabled survey and focus group discussions are now with the Mobility and Inclusion Unit, in draft form.</p><p>The next stage of the research will be to explore any international examples of good practice merit further exploration. A ‘menu’ of possible approaches to dealing with the conflict over the use of priority space will be put to the bus companies involved in this research, with a view to agreeing with them which elements they are willing to test out on a pilot basis.</p>
