2020 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Ste. 725 Washington, DC 20006

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Washington, DC (August 16, 2017) - The Black Psychiatrists of America, Inc. condemns all acts of violence and the particular acts of racism, bigotry, and intolerance recently displayed in Charlottesville, Virginia. We are saddened by the acts of violence related to racism and other forms of hate crimes in our communities. We offer our heartfelt condolences to those who were impacted by these divisive actions.

The recent events in Charlottesville will certainly remain a blemish on American history and democracy. Healthy debate, conflict and compromise are part of the American political tradition. Since 1969, this organization has advocated for a society that is free of racism and other forms of oppression. We understand that racism constitutes an adverse life experience that impacts both the physical and mental health of its victims. It also has a negative impact on those who perpetuate forms of racism, bigotry and intolerance on marginalized communities. The anti-Semitic, racist, anti-gay rhetoric referenced in this 'unnamed' movement is all too familiar to the American narrative, and calls for a continued conversation for a systemic healing of all forms of hatred and bigotry in America.

The Black Psychiatrists of America (BPA) in our dedication to the attainment of civil rights, dignity, and person hood for all, irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion, feel morally obligated to add our voice to those who see no moral equivalence between the activities of domestic hate and terrorist groups and the protests against them. Prompt statements from past presidents, church leaders, republican, and democratic leaders are most welcome and encouraging. It is anticipated their pronouncements will help mitigate further damage to the prestige of the US in the eyes of the whole world.

We will continue to strive for the elimination of mental health disparities and work to eliminate racism and foster resilience in our communities and the Nation.
