Library Bond a Big Plus

Library Bond a Big Plus

Library bond a big plus

Our View: Local libraries are a mainstay of communities across the state

San Bernardino County Sun 5/30/2006

Let's just get our bias out of the way right up front. We love reading. We hold literacy to be all-important. Reading and writing are not just our livelihood in the newspaper business, they are in our blood.

So, it should come as no surprise that we favor Proposition 81, a $600 million bond for construction, expansion and renovation of libraries.

We know the state is deeply in debt. However, besides our stated weakness for libraries, we think they repay communities and society much more than the money invested in them.

Libraries are so much more than stacks of books. They provide havens for children after school, a place where students can do their homework, a spot where they can use books or the Internet to do research. Modern libraries provide computer work stations, so even those who don't have Internet access can log on at the local library.

The funds provided by Proposition 81 would cover 65 percent of construction costs, leaving local communities to provide the other 35 percent to get their projects funded.

It took a number of tries and a great deal of communitywide commitment and persistence, but Fontana managed to secure a $14.9 million state grant to help build its much anticipated new library. It will be a downtown cornerstone when it opens. That money was part of a $350 million state bond approved by voters in 2000, and now all spent.

Proposition 81 will make the benefits of modern libraries available to more communities.

Vote yes on Proposition 81.
