<p>Dialectical Journal – Romantics & Transcendentalists </p><p>Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer</p><p>This book will be read in conjunction with the Transcendentalists (Thoreau and Emerson). Most of the reading will be outside of class, but it’s imperative that you do not fall behind with the reading. You will use the journaling format we have been using throughout the year (dialectical journal) for the following assignment.</p><p>Every journal must be accompanied with full commentary. The journal is a map of your thoughts; therefore, incomplete commentary depicts incomplete thought.</p><p>Part 1:</p><p>1. Five entries for McCandless’s attitude toward society: Note “attitude” and his thoughts concerning society as a whole. Do not include his feelings toward his family.</p><p>2. Five entries for society’s attitude toward McCandless, as reflected by people how knew him. </p><p>Part 2:</p><p>Chris McCandless’s philosophy on life can best be described as “living an authentic life.” Using Thoreau in your commentary, accomplish the following:</p><p>3. Five entries which reflect which McCandless’s attitude toward his life and how it should be lived. Reflect on his place in society and how his philosophy reflects Thoreau’s. </p><p>The complete journal will be due on the last day that we discuss the book in class. Bring the book with you each day.</p>
