<p>May 29, 2010</p><p>Hi everyone...</p><p>Patty and I had a great time at the Mountain Tour, Headquartered at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC. It was a comfortable 10 hr trailer pull from Ocala, with many stops. Jim Collop was nearby visiting and came over for a Kanuga breakfast one morning before we took off! The Kanuga toast is legendary.</p><p>There were 50 (restricted to this number) cars there and we enjoyed a rugged driving experience of many local mountain roads. There was no such thing as straight or level driving. Too many hair pin switchback turns to count per mile! We had 3 gravel road segments of 5-8 miles long. Much uphill driving was no more than 10-15 mph, and low gear got used quite a bit. </p><p>I thought I might have over heated my brake band a few times! We all used low and reverse to slow down occasionally to take the load off the brake band. </p><p>Those with Rocky Mountain brakes also were tested! Many were adjusted at stops to get them both working equally but occasionally we witnessed some smoke! The old saying about going down the grade in the same gear you climbed it was proven. Those light cars - i.e. speedsters - were at a great advantage in climbing and stopping...but the occasional mountain rain was more of an issue for them.</p><p>Our longest route was 112 miles, to get ice cream of course. The other days were generally in the range of 60-90 miles. We crossed the Eastern Continental Divide two or three times requiring us to climb over 3000 feet elevation. The cars ran perfectly at higher altitude and no carburetor adjustments were required....which proves we're probably running pretty "rich" at sea level! </p><p>Only a couple of mechanical problems developed. One car lost it's ring & pinion gear and was trailered. Another had a problem with the timer, which was corrected on the spot...as was a set of burned points in a distributor! Oh yes, the gravel roads? Required one tire change too! High/correct tire pressures may have saved the tire issue. Overall, it was not hard on cars because they were driven so thoughtfully!</p><p>We're going back next year!</p><p>Steve Ellis & Patty Meyers </p>
