<p> UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE OREGON</p><p>CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATION</p><p>CS-59 PAINTING WOODWORK</p><p>59.1 SCOPE</p><p>The work shall consist of cleaning, preparing surfaces and applying paints on wooden surfaces.</p><p>59.2 MATERIALS</p><p>The wood stain or paint shall be warranted by the manufacturer to meet the environmental condition of the site. The sealer, primer and paint or stain shall be compatible as set forth by the manufacturer’s recommendations.</p><p>The colors, gloss and type of finish shall be specified on the drawings, or approved by the technician.</p><p>59.3 SURFACE PREPARATION</p><p>Surfaces to be painted shall be thoroughly cleaned prior to the application of paint. Pitch pockets and knots shall be scraped and sealed with a shellac varnish. Previously painted surfaces shall be scraped and brushed to remove any checked or blistered paint and excess chalk. Paint edges shall be sanded and feathered for obtaining a uniform finish.</p><p>59.4 APPLICATION OF PAINT</p><p>Surfaces shall be clean and dry when paint is applied. No paint shall be applied until the prepared surfaces have been inspected and approved by the technician.</p><p>Unless otherwise specified on the drawings, surfaces shall be painted with one coat of exterior priming paint and two coats of exterior oil paint.</p><p>Each coat shall be applied in such a manner as to produce a paint film of uniform thickness with a finished surface free from runs, drops, ridges, laps or excessive brush marks. The drying time between coats shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. The coverage in square feet per unit shall not exceed the manufacturer’s recommendation.</p><p>The surface of each dried coat shall be cleaned and lightly sanded, if necessary, before application of the next coat. </p><p>USDA-NRCS-OR (CS-59-1/2) JULY 1997 59.5 ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS</p><p>Paint shall not be applied when the temperature of the wood surface or of the surrounding air is less than 45o F, nor when atmospheric conditions result in condensation of moisture on surface to be painted.
