<p> Casey Berg Scott Conley Kelly Engebretson 3/28/06 7th Hour</p><p>Chapter 21- Terms</p><p>Heterogeneous- consisting of different components Immigrants- aliens legally admitted as permanent residents Reservation- public lands set aside by a government for use by Native Americans Refugees- one who seeks protection from war, persecution, or some other danger Assimilation- process by which people of one culture merge and become a part of another culture Segregation- the separation of one group from another Jim Crow laws- laws that separate people on the basis of race Separate-but-equal doctrine- while blacks and whites were still separated they were given equal treatment. Integration- the process of bringing a group into the mainstream of society De Facto Segregation- segregation that is not protected by the law Affirmative Action- employers take positive steps to remedy the effects of past discrimination. Quota- giving a certain number of jobs and promotions to a certain group Reverse Discrimination- discrimination against the majority Citizen- one who owes allegiance to a nation Jus Soli- “law of the soil” or citizenship is determined by where a person was born Jus Sanguinis- “law of the blood” or citizenship is determined by whom one is born to Naturalization- legal process by which a person becomes a citizen Alien- citizen of a foreign country living in another country Expatriation- the legal process by which a loss of citizenship occurs Denaturalization- the process by which a naturalized citizen loses their citizenship involuntarily Deportation- a legal process in which illegal aliens are required to leave the country </p>
