<p> ENGLISH 101.04A SCHEDULE—Fall 2016</p><p>Subject to change: Changes and additions will be announced in class and posted on our course website. You are responsible for making sure you have up-to-date schedule information. Details for each assignment are provided separately as they come up throughout the quarter.</p><p>This schedule is incomplete: It includes most major due dates, but not all the daily activities. Each essay assignment sheet will contain more details, and in-class daily work may come up unnanounced.</p><p>Week 1 Mon 9/26: Introduction to the class and each other. Tue 9/27: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 1, “Thinking Well,” and Chapter 8, “Superstitions.” Wed 9/28: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 14, “Quoting.” Lecture and practice: how to integrate quotations into your writing. Begin Essay #1 (Personal Narrative). Thu 9/29: In-class writing to develop ideas for Essay #1 Fri 9/30: Due: 2 Seminar papers due (one for each essay) on “The Joys of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” by Sherman Alexie (15-19) and “The Fourth of July,” by Audre Lorde (254-258) in 50 Essays.</p><p>Week 2 Mon 10/3: Due: Preliminary Writing for Essay #1. Assignment will be provided. Tue 10/4: Due: Read Trimble Chapters 2 and 3, “Getting Launched” and “Openers.” In-class exercises based on these chapters. Wed 10/5: About the thesis and structure of Essay #1. Thu 10/6: Due: Seminar paper on “Joyas Voladores” (125-128). Fri 10/7: Due: Seminar paper on “Once More to the Lake,” by E.B. White (431-437).</p><p>Week 3 Mon 10/10: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 4 and 5, “Middles” and “Closers.” In-class exercises. Tue 10/11: Lesson on comma splices, clauses, and conjunctions. Wed 10/12: Practice with comma splices, clauses, and conjunctions. Thu 10/13: Quiz on comma splices, clauses, and conjunctions. Fri 10/14: Due: Essay #1 (Narrative) in Workshop groups. Bring 3 copies.</p><p>Week 4 Mon 10/17: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 13, “Punctuation.” Due: One typed sentence from your Essay # 1 that you are unsure how to punctuate. Tue 10/18: Due: Essay #1 (Narrative). Begin Essay #2 (Review). Wed 10/19: Look at sample reviews. Thu 10/20: Due: Worksheet for Essay #2. Fri 10/21: Introduction to ethos, pathos, and logos. Bring 50 Essays.</p><p>Week 5 Mon 10/24: Due: 2 seminar papers due (one for each essay) on “The Ugly Tourist,” by Jamaica Kincaid (199-202) and “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” by Nicholas Carr (91-102). Tue 10/25: Introduction to PIE paragraph structure. Wed 10/26: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 6, “Diction.” In-class activities with this chapter. Thu 10/27: More diction practice. Fri 10/28: Due: Essay #2 in Workshop groups. Bring 3 copies.</p><p>(over) Week 6 Mon 10/31: Quiz on diction Tue 11/1: Due: Essay #2 (Review). Begin Essay #3 (Problem/Solution). Wed 11/2: In-class work on developing ideas for Essay #3. Thu 11/3: Due: Seminar paper on “A Modest Proposal,” by Jonathan Swift, 408-416. Fri 11/4: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 7, “Readability.” </p><p>Week 7 Mon 11/5: Due: seminar paper on “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” by MLK Jr. (203-220). Tue 11/8: Due: Worksheet for Essay #3 Wed 11/9: Due: Read Trimble, Chapter 10, “Dramatizing your ideas.” In-class work with the material in this chapter. Thu 11/10: Work on developing Essay #3. Fri 11/11: Veterans’ Day Holiday. No class.</p><p>Week 8 Mon 11/14: Due: Essay #3 due Workshop groups. Bring 3 copies. Tue 11/15: Due: Essay #3 (Problem/Solution). Begin Essay #4 (Imitation/Analysis). Look at sample imitations. Wed 11/16: Imitation practice. Thu 11/17: Due: Seminar Paper on “On Being a Cripple,” by Nancy Mairs (259-271). Fri 11/18: Due: Seminar paper on “The Death of the Moth,” by Virginia Woolf, available online, links to be provided. Last day to withdraw.</p><p>Week 9 Mon 11/21: Further discussion of “The Death of the Moth.” Tue 11/22: In-class sentence analysis and imitation practice. Wed 11/23: Due in class: Imitation worksheet. Thu 11/24: Thanksgiving Holiday. No class. Fri 11/25: Thanksgiving Holiday. No class.</p><p>Week 10 Mon 11/28: Imitation practice. Tue 11/29: Due: Essay #4 (Imitation/Analysis) in Workshop groups. Bring three copies. This does not include the Introduction, just the Imitation. Wed 11/30: In-class writing on the Introduction to Essay #4. Bring your essay as it is so far and the text of the essay you are imitating, and be prepared to write. Thu 12/1: In-class work with Allegory. Fri 12/2: Due: Essay #4. Introduction to “Allegory of the Cave.”</p><p>Week 11 Mon 12/5: Due: Seminar paper on “Allegory of the Cave,” by Plato (303-311), in 50 Essays. Due: Optional revision of Essay #1, 2, or 3. The revision must include the Reflection, the original essay with my comments, and the original grade sheet). If you are choosing this revision option, you must have met with me earlier in the quarter to plan your revision. Tue 12/6: Practice in-class writing. Wed 12/7: Proposed essay question due. Thu 12/8: Discuss and choose essay questions. Fri 12/9: Revise and finalize essay questions.</p><p>Week 12 Mon 12/12: Write the in-class final. Last class meeting. Thu, Dec 15, 10:30-12:30: During this time I will be in my office. Feel free to come by if you’d like to pick up your final or discuss your work in the class.</p>
