<p> HS PTA Meeting Thursday, December 11, 2014</p><p>-Welcome -Attendance Book, Share Folder passed -Copies of the budget & last meeting’s minutes on tables -Thank You: Parents’ Night Out - Mia -Motion to accept minutes – November minutes accepted</p><p>Mr. Murray’s Report Happy Holidays. It has been a busy month - SADD blood drive had a good turn-out. The Fall play was 20th Century. It was a great production. DECA held financial literacy day at the middle schools, which went very well. DECA members taught the 5th graders the beginnings of personal finance. World language honor society held inductions last week. Orchestra/Jazz Concert was last night, went great. The Hour of Code is going on. Students can do it on their own or in school. If they want to learn how to code they are able to come to the library any time. We were on News 12 for the bond vote and the Hour of Code. METMUNC conference this weekend, additional schools joining conference this year, busy weekend, over 350 students are expected to participate. Progress reports will be posted next week and teacher recommendations for next yea’s courses will be posted next week. The Senior Citizen Tea and the Choir Concert are both next week. We lost 2 graduates this past week; John Ko (graduated in 2012) to colon cancer and Justin Kolmer. Guidance and Mr. Bolen were available to discuss the students’ concerns.</p><p>Ms. Lynn’s Report College application process: 87% of seniors submitted applications. Ahead of where we were last year at this time. We held 6 onsite programs, where college make on the spot decisions. 112 students participated. Not counting Nassau Community College, we had an 85% acceptance rate. 16 students received $150,000 in scholarships from Hofstra and LIU Post. Hosted annual alumni Q and A Day. The day before Thanksgiving, alumni spoke to seniors in health classes and teachers wore their favorite college shirts (they donate to wear) We had our 1st Volunteer Fair. 11 community organizations were represented. We are starting scheduling for next year; we will kick off with an assembly that will show a video to explain all elective course offerings. Next week parents will get e-mail letters about course selection and course offerings. When we get back in January students will meet with their counselors. Course requests will be posted on the portal.</p><p>President’s Report 15/16 calendar: School is not starting until 9/9. No Feb. break, due to late start. Parents’ Bill of Rights re: student information is on district website. 3rd party vendors must agree to the terms in order to do business with district. Athletics follow-up: College Visits will be treated as excused absences as long as the athlete has the required number of practices. No practices will conflict with Freshman Orientation. Transportation follow-up: Will work on getting 10th period buses to stay longer.</p><p>Committee Reports</p><p>Membership – 890 members, 729 parents, 68 additional, 40 students, 50 staff and 3 alumni </p><p>Treasurer – Main account $11861.64, Scholarship $11,531.05 (included parents’ night out and the reserve of $4700)</p><p>College Awards- Parents Night Out made $1500. Will kick off Dental Dollars after the break.</p><p>Arts & Ed – Want to bring in more of the arts, not just anti-bullying, but dancing and theater. SEPTA is bringing in Mad Science and POBMS the Harlem Globetrotters. Community Awareness – 12/20 - Red Cross and NY Islanders are holding a blood drive. Donors will get a voucher for 2 tickets. Nassau County is rolling out Smart 911 through website with personal information to create a profile to be used in a crisis. 911 is not a direct line to the Plainview Fire Department (938-2727).</p><p>Health – A plan is being finalized for 6th and 8th grade AIS students to have the option to take health class once a week. Looking at 0, 9th and 10th periods or during lunch. The district is having a company come in to spray down the wrestling mats to prevent skin rashes. The district discussed the Digital Citizenship week. In 12th grade health classes they are discussing their digital footprint.</p><p>Site-Based – The senior class is working on the Senior Superlatives. Junior class looking at site for their prom. Freshman class sold long sleeve shirts. Discussed closing the campus for 9th and 10th grade in the 2015-16 school year.</p><p>Title IX – Want to put together a brochure about tips on technology</p><p>Transportation – Will be observing the 10th period buses to make sure they stay long enough, especially on days when the weather is terrible.</p><p>Directory – Almost complete</p><p>Founders Day – Parent recipient is Ronni Leo. Staff recipients are Ms. Schaffer (guidance) and Ms. Santorello (business teacher). 3/13 at Crest Hollow Country Club</p><p>Liaison Reports</p><p>POBMS – Had holiday boutique & book fair. Harlem Globetrotters are coming in on Tuesday,</p><p>MAPOB – Last meeting addressed middle school students, and their options for music. Only 3 parents showed up. Next meeting in January</p><p>New Business</p><p>Vote on bylaws - A motion to accept the new bylaws was made and seconded. Motion carried.</p>
