Jessica LoVecchio 11/15/09 English- period 4

Grandmother’s victory a) I believe that Angelou’s intent of telling ‘Grandmother’s victory’ is more complex than just bad-mannered children and racism. Racism is the main idea of the story but I think the story is more about standing up for yourself and overcoming strong issues such as racism. Huge issues such as racism can either have positive outcomes or sadly have horribly outcomes. The story of Grandmothers victory is about how Annie, her mother and her grandmother overcame the issue by standing up for themselves and not giving into the cruel and unjustified position of the young girls. Grandmother Henderson’s two most important commandments were thou shall not be dirty and though shall not be impudent by the end of the story, Annie not only followed her grandmother’s commandments but maybe it rubbed off a little on the impudent girls. e) Angelou’s uses many metaphors and similes to create the obviously unflattering picture of the “powhitetrash children” The author described horrible situations that the “powhitetrash children” put Annie, her mother and her grandmother in. The kids bossed the family around in their own store and bullied Annie’s’ mother to the point where Annie felt like she wanted to shoot them with the gun that her family hides in a trunk. The girls mock the entire family even on their own property. Annie described how they treated her family member “They called my uncle by his first name and ordered him around the Store. He, to my crying shame, obeyed them in his limping dip-straight-sip fashion.”(paragraph 8) The children were not only disrespectful but they were extremely rude.
