Common Core for English and Math North Carolina Essential Standards for Social Studies and Science

The International Baccalaureate curriculum supports and enhances the Common Core and Essential Standards.

More information about curriculum standards is available on the Onslow County Schools website at http://onslowcounty.schoolinsites.com/ What are the behavior  Be Respectful. Be engaged and ready to participate. Accept directions, feedback or expectations? corrections from staff by listening and asking appropriate questions. Respect others’ right to learn. Raise your hand to participate in whole class activities or to get my attention. I will also raise my hand as a signal that I need everyone to stop, look and listen to my directions. Value the property of others.  Be Responsible. Arrive on time. Be prepared for instruction with all necessary materials. Leave your area clean and free of trash.  Be Safe. Use materials only as instructed. Are there any school wide and As a school, we follow PBIS procedures that have been established school wide. Inside classroom policies/procedures each classroom you will follow the individual teacher’s guidelines. I need to know? As a school policy, when a teacher or staff member raises his or her hand, you will follow the teacher’s example by raising your hand and being silent.

What consequences should I All students are expected to follow the NWPMS Student Handbook. expect if I don’t follow class Green: All students will start on green with a clean slate each day in each class period. procedures? Blue: Student will receive a verbal reminder to stop inappropriate behavior and get on task. Yellow: Student will sit in an alternate seat within the classroom for 10-15 minutes to “get it together” before rejoining the class. Orange: Student will sit in an alternate seat within the classroom for the remainder of the class period. S/he will also complete the reflection portion of a Behavior Intervention Form and receive corresponding teacher consequences. Communication with the parent will ensue. How should I save my All students will have an Office 365 account that you can access from any computer at assignments and projects when home or at school. You will save all of your work to your Office 365 account. Students using technology? may not use the Student Share or a USB drive due to the lack of security with those two options. Will homework be assigned in Students may expect homework on a daily basis. this class?

What is the Outline of Units of Math: 1st nine weeks ► Rational numbers and Expressions and Equations Study for this class? 7.NS.1 & 3 Adding & Subtracting Rational Numbers & applications 7.NS.2 & 3 Multiplying & Dividing Rational Numbers & applications, converting fractions to decimals 7.EE.1 & 2 Simplifying expressions with rational quantities, writing algebraic expressions to represent info in word problems 2nd nine weeks ► Ratios and proportional relationships

Vision: Excellence in Education Mission: The Northwoods Park Middle School community will prepare students to be globally competitive leaders and responsible citizens in the 21st century. E.1.1 Compare the composition, properties and structure of Earth’s atmosphere to include mixtures of gases and differences in temperature and pressure within layers. 7. E.1.2 Explain how the cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere and atmospheric conditions relate to the weather patterns on earth. 7. E.1.3 Explain the relationship between the movements of air masses, high and low pressure systems, and frontal boundaries to storms (including thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes) and other weather conditions that may result. 7.E.1.4 Predict weather conditions and patterns based on information obtained from: • Weather data collected from direct observations and measurement (wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity and air pressure). • Weather maps, satellites and radar 2nd nine weeks ► Understand the processes, structures and functions of living organisms that enable them to survive, reproduce and carry out the basic functions of life. 7.L.1.1 Compare the structures and life functions of single-celled organisms that carry out all of the basic functions of life including: • Euglena • Amoeba • Paramecium • Volvo 7. L.1.2 Compare the structures and functions of plant and animal cells, including major organelles (cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and vacuoles). 7. L.1.3 Summarize the hierarchical organization of multi-cellular organisms from cells to tissues to organs to systems to organisms.

3rd nine weeks ► Understand the relationship of the mechanisms of cellular reproduction, patterns of inheritance and external factors to potential variation and survival among offspring. 7. L.2.1 Explain why offspring that result from sexual reproduction (fertilization and meiosis) have greater variation than offspring that result from asexual reproduction (budding and mitosis). 7. L.2.2 Infer patterns of heredity using information from Punnett squares and pedigree analysis. 7. L.2.3 Explain the impact of the environment and lifestyle choices on biological inheritance (to include common genetic diseases) and survival. Vision: Excellence in Education Mission: The Northwoods Park Middle School community will prepare students to be globally competitive leaders and responsible citizens in the 21st century. Purpose: Inspiring learners to open global gateways 7. L.1.4 - Summarize the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, and excretion) and ways that these systems interact with each other to sustain life. 4th nine weeks Understand motion, the effects of forces on motion and the graphical representations of motion. Understand forms of energy, energy transfer and transformation and conservation in mechanical systems. 7. P.1.1 Explain how the motion of an object can be described by its position, direction of motion, and speed with respect to some other object. 7. P.1.2 Explain the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces acting on an object (including friction, gravity and magnets). 7. P.1.3 Illustrate the motion of an object using a graph to show a change in position over a period of time. 7. P.1.4 Interpret distance versus time graphs for constant speed and variable motion.

7. P.2.1 Explain how kinetic and potential energy contribute to the mechanical energy of an object. 7. P.2.2 Explain how energy can be transformed from one form to another (specifically potential energy and kinetic energy) using a model or diagram of a moving object (roller coaster, pendulum, or cars on ramps as examples). 7.P.2.3 Recognize that energy can be transferred from one system to another when two objects push or pull on each other over a distance (work) and electrical circuits require a complete loop through which an electrical current can pass. 7. P.2.4 Explain how simple machines such as inclined planes, pulleys, levers and wheel and axels are used to create mechanical advantage and increase efficiency. What kind of assignments can I Homework assignment will be given daily in math and can be found on EDMODO and in expect? the student’s agenda. Students will need to study for all test and quizzes. . Math students will have Study Island for math and science. In Science if students do not finish their classwork than they will be required to finish it at home. Both classes will use an interactive notebook. There is no extra credit. What do I need to do if I am Students have five school days to make up missed assignments for partial credit. See absent? NWPMS Student Handbook for additional information. Missing assignments will be recorded as a zero if the assignment is not submitted within five days.

What is the grading policy for Grading Scale this class? A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: Below 59 To earn full credit for any assignment, the assignment must be turned in on time. Late work is accepted within five days of the missed deadline. After a deadline, the grade for a missing assignment ten points for each day late. If late work is turned in lowest grade will be a 60. Highest grade for a study guide if it is turned late is a 40, due to answers are given in class. Study guides are graded. School work that is not turned in stays a zero. Work is not accepted on the last day of any grading period. What supplies will I need to be Fully charged 1:1 laptop every day (do not bring chargers to school). successful?
