<p> Accountability Meeting</p><p>CSDB Accountability Meeting 10.5.2016 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Lions Building</p><p>Facilitators Jon Vigne, Barbara Lambert, Melissa Shular Minutes Julie Cuccaro Interpreter Laura Ramos and guests</p><p>Cathy Bennett, Rachel Greenleaf, Carol Hilty, Kristen Huddleston, Cody Attendees Kerekes, Barb Meese, Joyce Smith, Kyle Viola, Tera Wilkins </p><p>Introduction/Review of Minutes – Barbara Lambert</p><p> Barbara led welcome and introductions.  Reviewed Accountability minutes from September 7, 2016. No changes were indicated.</p><p>Program Highlights – Student Life and Employability Center</p><p>Discussion</p><p>Student Life Program Highlights –</p><p> Special Olympics is underway.  Goalball has also started. There is a boys and a girls goalball team.  Cody reported Homecoming weekend was fantastic, and students had a lot of fun. CSDB football team played Phoenix Day School for the Deaf and won. CSDB goalball teams competed against New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and California School for the Blind. All students gave it a great effort.  A student, in the School for the Blind, wrote a letter to Carol Hilty requesting permission to start a survival club. Students are busy getting it set-up and are making their own survival kits.  Springs Trampoline continues to be a favorite activity, for our students.  USA Hockey collaboration, for students who are visually impaired, and USA Hockey collaboration, for students who are deaf, were both very successful events. Students have asked to continue this activity in the future.  Homework clubs, in the School for the Blind, are going well.  Strategic Planning team is focusing on nutrition. Students have been cooking and swapping the recipes.  Three new dorm supervisors have been hired, two of whom are former CSDB students. Accountability Meeting</p><p>Employability Center (EC) Program Highlights – </p><p> Staff are busy placing Bridges to Life (BtL) and On-the-Job Training (OJT) students in many different work-study positions. Several students are enrolled in college courses. Supported OJT students are all working. We have new partnerships, with several local businesses and agencies.  Kyle reported students, in Junior/Senior Career Exploration classes, participated in Colorado Construction Career Day. Students learned about tools, participated in many hands-on activities, learned about different types of construction careers and interacted with people from a variety of construction-related businesses.  The EC applied for and received a Parent Staff Organization (PSO) grant. Monies were used to buy materials and seed which the students will plant and learn to successfully grow and harvest.  The next BtL theme is “Government”. BtL students visited the Independence Center, learned about the upcoming election, how to register to vote, and practiced using an electronic ballot. Students will visit both the Democratic headquarters and the Republican headquarters, this month.</p><p>Review of 2016-2017 Schoolwide Plan Discussion</p><p>Academic Strand</p><p>Literacy and Numeracy- Family Centered Early Education (FCEE) – Reported by Tera Wilkins</p><p>Strategy #1, Students will demonstrate growth, within academics and identified areas of specialized skills, through personalized learning - </p><p> Tera reported Schoolwide Plan workgroups began in September, and teams will meet twice per month. Teams, from both schools, are collaborating on the identified action steps.  Four workgroups were developed. Two workgroups will review current curriculum and assessments and will develop and prioritize individual student learning profiles. Two workgroups will develop a template, related to experiential learning and technology, which will focus on speech, math, English and ASL, for students who are deaf.  School for the Blind has completed two project-based learning activities.  CSDB recently adopted a new learning management system called CANVAS. FCEE staff can use different templates, to design home pages, which are specifically geared toward preschool – 2 nd grade students.  In response to a question from Melissa, Tera explained the READ Act and how it relates to students with blindness or deafness. The curriculum assessment team will be reviewing how to appropriately identify students who qualify with a reading deficiency.</p><p>Strategy #2, CSDB staff will foster collaborative relationships with parents, stakeholders and service providers – </p><p> A representative, from CSDB, is collaborating with The Resource Exchange (TRE) and with preschool Accountability Meeting</p><p>Child Find Coordinators throughout the Pikes Peak Region. Representatives will attend meetings , to ensure CSDB is seen as a placement option.  Tera Wilkins has been reaching out to agencies to discuss partnerships and to ensure parents know about all possible education options. Other staff members are scheduling meetings, with community center boards, statewide.  Parent education/family engagement teams are developing a variety of workshops. Workshops are currently being planned for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Family-centered ASL classes are in the planning stages. Families are currently being surveyed, to determine specific interests.  CSDB will host a Fall Festival, October 31, with literacy and numeracy activities, for parents. Families, from local school districts, will be invited to attend.</p><p>Literacy and Numeracy - Grades 3-12 – Reported by Kristen Huddleston, Cathy Bennett</p><p>Strategy #1, Students will demonstrate growth, within academics and identified areas of specialized skills, through personalized learning - </p><p> Five Strategic Plan workgroups, in both schools, grades 3-12, are also collaborating twice per month.  Staff are adapting Expanded Core Curriculum, for students with hearing loss.  The communication team is focusing on ASL language development.  Currently the schools are planning for more individualized professional development time, by department.  Common Sense Media training was provided to students, before devices were handed out.  School for the Blind has been experimenting with a block schedule, for the elementary department.  A grades 3-5 Math intervention class has been added to the schedule.  School for the Deaf has purchased two new literacy curriculums and is developing the next steps to implement them.  Teachers are learning how to use CANVAS. Staff are also being trained to use other technologies and have had technology goals added as part of their performance plans. </p><p>Strategy #2, CSDB staff will foster collaborative relationships with parents, community, stakeholders and service providers, as partners in student achievement – </p><p> Parents have been contacted about Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC), October 20, and schedules have been sent out. Carol asked the schools, as well as Family Involvement Coordinators, to please send reminders, since responses have been slow.  A list of other activities planned during PTC will be School for the Blind literacy and braille workshop, grades 5-8 Science Fair, and representatives, from Gallaudet University and Rochester Institute of Technology, will be at CSDB to talk with high school families about planning for college.  Cathy reported we are still focused on how to increase parent involvement and exploring different ways to achieve that. </p><p> Teachers are tracking all parent communication contacts/attempts on their parent logs, in accordance with each parent compact.  Staff will be showing families how they can utilize CANVAS.  Reviewed Student/School/Parent Compacts. Jamie reported 100% of compacts have been signed in School for the Blind. Kristen reported elementary/middle school have nearly 100% signed in School for the Deaf. Cathy reported 34 out of 50, or 68%, of high school compacts, have been completed. Tera Lynn reported 100% have been signed, for on-campus Bridges to Life program. Accountability Meeting</p><p>School Events and Upcoming Announcements</p><p> BtL students will visit both the Republican headquarters and Democratic headquarters. Students will then begin preparing to vote, in November.  Deafblind presentation at UCCS. The topic is “Coco’s Travels”.  Students will participate in a variety of Halloween-related activities, throughout October.  Oct. 5 – Student Residential Assistant (SRA) open house, for middle and high school dorm students.  Oct. 6 – Goalball team will visit Pikes Peak Christian School, to teach students how goalball is played.  Oct. 7 – Football home game against Elbert.  Oct. 7 – Annual Breakfast, hosted by overnight staff, for dorm and day students.  Oct. 11 – BtL students will be cooking, in the dorms, as related to our Strategic Plan.  Oct. 13 – Board of Trustees meeting.  Oct. 13 – Adams building Fall Harvest event.  Oct. 14 – White Cane Day celebration, in Acacia Park. Bulldog Band will perform.  Oct. 14 – Elementary field trip to the pumpkin patch, in Canon City.  Oct. 20-21 – Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Oct. 25 – Field trip to the Tactile Gallery, in the Fine Arts Center.  Oct. 26 – Staff vs. students volleyball game.  Oct. 27 – High school boys will be cooking for the high school girls, in the dorm.  Oct. 27 – National Federation for the Blind Convention, in Denver. Some staff and students will attend.  Oct. 31 – FCEE Fall Harvest Festival.</p><p>Meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.</p><p>Next Accountability Meeting will be November 2, 2016, 5:00- 6:30pm, in the Lions Building. </p>
