"We are disappointed that voters chose not to enhance the library, but we will forge ahead to continue to provide the kind of service people expect from us."

The plan included renovating the current 27,000 square foot building and adding a 23,000 square foot addition.

It has been 27 years since a referendum benefiting the library has passed, and the Library has gone to referendum five times in its history as a district (1989, 1990, 1993, 2009, and 2016).

"It's too soon to tell when we will attempt another referendum or what form future expansion plans might take,” said Carl F. Gilmore, library board president. "As a board, we wish to thank the citizens who volunteered and worked so hard in support of these referenda. Going forward, the board will look to operate the Library to the best of our ability with our current budget and space." The board of trustees anticipates it will have to shorten hours as well as cut popular services in some combination in the near future.

The limiting property tax rate increase would have allowed the Library to issue General Obligation Alternate Revenue bonds to fund the costs of the renovation and addition to the building, its contents, and the purchase of additional property to ensure adequate parking.

The Library is currently 2.12% of the total tax bill. This referendum or the failed 2016 referenda would have increased the Library’s portion of the total tax bill to just under 4% if either had been successful.

For more information, contact Pappas at (815) 436-6639.

***END***
