<p>Unit 7.2</p><p>Something Different!</p><p>Hands up if you love the Internet? </p><p>Today, and for the next couple of lessons, you will have the chance to use the Internet (possibly not for the first time I can bet!). Here’s what we are going to do:</p><p>Student Task: Time Span 1  Create an individual e-mail account One/two lessons using student’s personal details.</p><p> Exchange e-mail details with classmates and communicate with each other.</p><p>2  Learn how to use Internet search One lesson engines (e.g. Google.com) properly and use them to find specific information on the net.</p><p> E-mail task to teacher and act on teacher’s reply.</p><p>3  Create</p><p>OK, so now we know what we are going to do, but how do we do it?</p><p>The answers are over the page, so turn over and make sure you listen to your teacher carefully ...... Unit 7.2: Task 1 Task Brief</p><p>Creating a new E-mail account</p><p>1. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.</p><p>2. Enter the web address www.yahoo.com, you will now see a web page similar to this:</p><p>3. Click on the icon that says Mail.</p><p>4. Now you need to select the Sign up Now option, which will take you through to the sign up page. </p><p>5. On the next page select the Free E-mail account option.</p><p>6. Now the hard bit! Enter all your personal details, making sure you fill in every detail. Turn over the page to see what you will be dealing with ...... and if you still have any questions then put your hand up and ask. Yahoo! E-mail sign in page When creating your e-mail account you will be asked to fill in the sign up sheet below. Take a look at it and note the pointers below in the text boxes (they are there to help you). Your Yahoo! ID will be the first part of Your password must be six your e-mail, i.e. it will be your e-mail characters long. Type it in address without the @yahoo.co.uk. twice for verification.</p><p>When selecting an ‘Industry’ Leave blank etc. (i.e. the line of work you are in) select any option you would like, as your still in Unit 7.2: Task 2</p><p>Internet Search Engines We all know what the Internet is and how to use it, well at least we think so! Most of you have probably got access to the Internet at home or visit the I.T. club at lunch times in school and have used it then. But do you know how to use the Internet properly? </p><p>Search Engines</p><p>Question:</p><p>First of all, ask yourself what is a search engine? Have you ever used one? Can you name one?</p><p>Answer:</p><p>Simply put, an Internet search engine helps you to locate and find information on the World Wide Web, which we don’t know how to find or simply can’t find.</p><p>Popular search engines you may know of include:</p><p> www.google.com</p><p> www.yahoo.com</p><p> www.ask.com (ask Jeeves)</p><p>Task Brief Following the demonstration by your teacher showing you how to use Internet search engines, it is now your chance to show your teacher how well you can use the Internet.</p><p> You will need to use the Internet to find and locate the answers to the questions below (use the Internet search engine of your choice).</p><p> When you have found the answers, type them into a word document which is titled ‘Internet Search Task’</p><p> You are then to e-mail your answers as an attachment to your teacher who will then mark your work and reply to your e-mail. </p><p>Questions:</p><p>1. How old is Her Majesty the Queen of England?</p><p>2. What is the maximum attendance (i.e. number of people who can sit) at the Millennium stadium in Cardiff?</p><p>3. Who won the 2004 European Cup in Japan?</p><p>4. How many number 1 hits have Girls Aloud had?</p><p>5. Who was the first person to walk on the moon?</p><p>6. What was the date of the first moonwalk?</p><p>7. How old is Ant from the TV presenters Ant and Dec?</p><p>8. Where in the World is The Hague?</p><p>9. What does the term IBM stand for (in I.T. terms)?</p><p>10. Where in Europe is the city of Prague?</p><p>Using your research skills see if you can complete the tasks below:</p><p>Task Business Brochures</p><p>Word Processing applications are fantastic for creating documents, as you all now know. You can type something, save it, print it, change it and save and print it again! If you were doing this on paper it would take many pieces of paper, a great deal of time and effort and a sore hand.</p><p>Task Brief</p><p>You work for the Welsh Tourist Board in Swansea. Recently you received a letter from the Dutch Tourist Board asking for information on tourist attractions in Wales. After some research, you will create a brochure using your word processing skills that will show people in Holland exactly what Wales has to offer.</p><p>Your brochure must meet the following specifications: </p><p>1. Select an appropriate software application to create your brochure. 2. In order to make the brochure look as presentable as possible you should make the page orientation landscape. 3. Split your page into columns, but not too many. 4. Make sure you add your businesses name at the top of the brochure, i.e. Wales Tourist Board. 5. Also add the address and contact details of your attractions. 6. Insert relevant images that can be associated with your attractions. 7. Make sure that you add text to explain to people what they can do whilst they are there.</p><p>Watch your teacher’s demonstration to get plenty of tips of how to create your brochure!</p><p>Task</p><p>Something Different! For this task you are going to need all of your I.C.T knowledge and skills. To complete task 6 you will be given the opportunity to use your own judgement, knowledge and ideas to complete the specifications in the task brief.</p><p>Task Brief Daniel James School asked been asked to enter a competition by the City & County of Swansea. The competition states that students in Year 8 of Swansea schools are to create a poster that highlights the advantages and disadvantages of Computer use. The poster must meet the exact specifications as set out by the City & County of Swansea Education Board; they are:</p><p> Students should select an appropriate software application to create their poster.</p><p> Students are to gather information required below, from the following web address: </p><p> www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/ict/implications/index.shtml</p><p> Students should gather information in draft form on A4 paper before entering it into the poster.</p><p> The following information should be covered in the poster:</p><p>Students should be able to explain: 1. How I.C.T has improved the way in which people work, i.e. how have working patterns changed?</p><p>2. How has I.C.T changed our social life and leisure time?</p><p>3. How has the internet affected our?</p><p>4. What worries are there about crime associated with I.C.T, i.e. Computer Crime.</p><p> Save your work as Poster Competition.</p><p> Let your teacher know when you have finished so that your work can be checked and then printed. Some Pointers:</p><p>1. When gathering information from the Internet it is important to realise that you do not need to copy all of the text word for word! </p><p>2. Just use the information that you think you need and jot it down onto a piece of A4 paper.</p><p>3. When creating a poster use various application functions, i.e. change the font type, colour and size and use images to make it look more presentable.</p><p>4. Use your experience of ICT and really try and impress the councillors at the City of Swansea to show them what you can do!</p><p>4. If you get stuck don’t forget to look back at previous tasks you have completed to help you and if your still stuck then put your hand up and ask your teacher for help.</p>
