The problem with this, where you've got a split focus</p><p>0117 10:05:58:22 10:06:02:22 and you've got more than one group misbehaving,</p><p>0118 10:06:02:22 10:06:06:14 is that once you try and deal with that kind of attention seeking,</p><p>0119 10:06:06:14 10:06:09:10 then something else kicks off behind you.</p><p>0120 10:06:09:10 10:06:11:24</p><p>I often find it's best to position yourself</p><p>0121 10:06:11:24 10:06:15:14 in front of your classroom door. "This is my territory", yeah?</p><p>0122 10:06:15:14 10:06:18:09</p><p>"Nobody's coming in until we've got this sorted out."</p><p>0123 10:06:18:09 10:06:22:18</p><p>And try not to get distracted into dealing with those minor incidents</p><p>0124 10:06:22:18 10:06:24:17 that can be deferred to later on.</p><p>0125 10:06:24:17 10:06:27:24</p><p>So you might say to the boys, "I've noticed what you're doing."</p><p>0126 10:06:27:24 10:06:30:07</p><p>"I'm going to deal with it in a moment."</p><p>0127 10:06:30:07 10:06:33:19</p><p>To the girls, you might say, "We have a clear desk policy."</p><p>0128 10:06:33:19 10:06:36:12</p><p>"We don't get anything out until sir says so."</p><p>0129 10:06:36:12 10:06:38:24</p><p>So until you've got them in their seats</p><p>0130 10:06:38:24 10:06:42:06 you need to defer any of this low-level misbehaviour</p><p>0131 10:06:42:06 10:06:45:03 which is getting in the way of you getting on, isn't it?</p><p>0132 10:06:45:03 10:06:46:07</p><p>Yeah, it is.</p><p>0133 10:06:46:07 10:06:49:05</p><p>So you let them into the classroom.</p><p>0134 10:06:49:05 10:06:51:01</p><p>And what happens next?</p><p>0135 10:06:51:01 10:06:53:01</p><p>(Mark) They came in rowdy,</p><p>0136 10:06:53:01 10:06:55:24 and it just took so long to settle them down.</p><p>0137 10:06:55:24 10:06:58:22</p><p>I was asking them to stop and stop and stop...</p><p>0138 10:06:58:22 10:07:00:24</p><p>(Sue) And you were starting to shout.</p><p>0139 10:07:00:24 10:07:03:15</p><p>(Mark) They were engrossed in what they were doing.</p><p>0140 10:07:03:15 10:07:06:11</p><p>Stop. Stop.</p><p>0141 10:07:06:11 10:07:08:14</p><p>Some teachers will make the mistake</p><p>0142 10:07:08:14 10:07:12:06 of trying to use their voice to control the level of noise.</p><p>0143 10:07:12:06 10:07:15:07</p><p>Once the noise gets to a certain level in the classroom,</p><p>0144 10:07:15:07 10:07:19:02 no matter how loud you shout, and it is doing your voice damage,</p><p>0145 10:07:19:02 10:07:22:05 no matter how loud you shout they aren't going to hear you.</p><p>0146 10:07:22:05 10:07:26:14</p><p>In this sort of situation, I'd say try some sort of nonverbal signal.</p><p>0147 10:07:26:14 10:07:30:13 So you might simply stand with your arms folded, looking at your watch,</p><p>0148 10:07:30:13 10:07:32:10 the expression on your face saying:</p><p>0149 10:07:32:10 10:07:35:12</p><p>"What do you think you're doing? You're wasting time."</p><p>0150 10:07:35:12 10:07:40:10</p><p>You might try something else.
