Advisory College Unit Project

For the culminating project in advisory during this unit, we will create a College Fair for the entire 9th grade. We will work in small groups to research a specific college and design a college “booth” to educate other students about your college. During the day of the College Fair, students will take turns “manning” the booth and walking around to learn about all the other colleges. We anticipate that our College Fair will have booths representing about 30 different colleges and universities.

The College Fair Booth

Each booth must have the following two components:

Large Visual: A booth wants to capture the attention of students by having appealing images and clear information. A poster, tri-fold, or banner are the most common ways that college booths achieve this.

Take-Away Materials: Colleges like to provide materials that students can take with them if they are interested in learning more about the college. Brochures, bookmarks, and one-pagers are popular items that colleges provide to students at college fairs.

Choosing a College

Your advisory teacher will assign each group a type of college, and you will be allowed to select any college within this “type”. Advisors will make sure that groups in different advisories do not have the same college. Examples of college “types” include: Public State (SUNY), Public City (CUNY), Private Home, Private Away, Public Out-of-State, Arts-Specialized School, Community College.

Procedure

Step 1: Research your college and take notes.

Step 2: Create Poster and Brochure (or other materials).

Step 3: Create “talking points” for College Fair booth.

Resources

Online Resources: Official College Website College Board Website: http://www.collegeboard.org/ College Promotional Materials College Guidebooks Advisory Project College Lists

SUNY CUNY Private – Near Home

Binghamton University Hunter College Pace University

SUNY New Paltz John Jay College St. Johns University

SUNY Stonybrook Queens College Fordham University

University at Buffalo Baruch College Manhattanville College

SUNY Old Westbury York College Hofstra University

SUNY Oswego City College Adelphi University

SUNY Farmingdale Medgar Evers College Columbia University

Lehman College New York University

Private- Away Art School & Community College Technical/Engineering

Johnson & Wales University Pratt Institute (Brooklyn) LaGuardia Community (Providence, RI) Fashion Institute of Queensborough Community Howard University (Washington, Technology (SUNY) College DC) New York City College of Kingsborough Community Dartmouth College (New Technology (CUNY) Borough of Manhattan Hampshire) Massachusetts College of Community Skidmore College (Upstate NY) Arts and Design (Boston) Hostos Community College St Lawrence College (Upstate NY) Culinary Institute of America (Upstate NY) Wheaton College (Massachusetts) Juilliard School (Manhattan)

Out-of-State Public

Penn State University University of Connecticut University of Delaware

Western Connecticut State University Temple University Grading Criteria for Take-Away Materials

Excellent!
