<p>Fecal Incontinence Handout</p><p>Fecal Incontinence can be a difficult problem for both the patient and the physician. Unfortu- nately it is not socially acceptable to discuss this in public. It certainly does not make good din- ner conversation. We understand your frustration, embarrassment, fears, etc. You can rest as- sured that you are not alone and that it is more common than you could ever imagine. </p><p>There are more treatment options available now than ever before. As we discussed in clinic, we need to try conservative or non-surgical treatment prior to surgery. It is important that you keep a journal of your incontinence episodes. We can provide one for you if needed. </p><p>Treatment Strategies</p><p>1. Start taking Fiber Pill (FiberCon or generic equivalent) 2 times a day Later can try to increase to 2 pill 2 times a day This will add bulk to your stools</p><p>2. Imodium or Lomotil 1-2 pills every 6 hours as needed The goal is for constipation in order to prevent leakage Especially good if you are leaving the house for an extended period of time</p><p>3. If no adequate Bowel Movement take a glass of Miralax at night Stop taking Imodium or Lomotil until bowel movement has occurred</p><p>4. Diet Limit caffeine intake Limit fresh fruits and vegetables These can cause gas and loose stools that can increase leakage Try to make sure they are cooked Avoid high ruffage foods like lettuce and cabbage </p><p>Our overall strategy is to bulk the stool and slow down or constipate you. Obviously this can lead to some discomfort which is why we recommend a laxative like Miralax at night if no bowel movement has occurred. </p><p>It is very important that you experiment with the above strategies. If we still aren’t satisfied, we will discuss surgical treatments such as the Sacral Nerve Stimulator. </p><p>Lastly, do not hesitate to contact our office with any question. </p>
