<p> COOL TOOL # 12 Teaching Students the Behaviors we want to see! Olson Elementary- Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)</p><p>Universal Expectation: Be Respectful Name of the Skill/Performance Standard: Solve Problems Peacefully Setting: Classroom Purpose of the lesson & why it's important: To solve conflicts effectively, it’s important for everyone to be heard by others, hear others, and work together to solve problems respectfully. Teaching Examples:  BREAKFAST Video skit available by email from Mr. Waz. Created by 5th grade Leadership students. Introduces using a round table to solve problems peacefully.  2nd – 5th grade- Read King Arthur’s Round Table Story (available in LMC). Role Play- Teacher presents a problem (for example, 2nd-5th grade students- at breakfast Sally started a mean rumor about Ellie and now nobody will sit next to Sally and she feels very upset. Set up a table with 2-4 chairs. Ask for student volunteers to act as Sally, Ellie, and 2 bystanders that witnessed it. Teacher is the Moderator of the Round Table discussion with the 4 students. Others observe. Moderator, “Each student will have 1 minute to tell their side of the story. Please include an I statement like ‘I felt ____. When you ___. I wish you would ____. After each student talks for 1 minute, I’ll ask us to decide on ‘what’s the main problem?’ ‘what are some solutions?’ and finally what will be our resolution.” Let students role play it out. Let students come up with problems to role play a Round Table discussion. You could provide a special table in the room that’s always used for this type of problem solving.  K-1st Grade Role Play- Teach the students the components of an “I Statement.” Write on the board & have the class repeat together : I felt ___ when you ____ I wish you would ___. Then brainstorm as a class situations where an I Statement might be helpful, an example is “I felt sad when you went ahead of me in line, I wish you would stay in your own spot.” Using the student generated list of situations, ask for volunteers to create an I Statement for each one. </p><p>Follow-up Reinforcement Activities: Verbal Praise- “I noticed you did a great job solving that problem with your friends today at lunch.” Flower Award for Solving Problems Peacefully.</p><p>PBS Team- Alice Turner, Vib Kale, Kristine Harms, Kris Colbert, Sheri Boser, Paul Gillis, Cathy Krause, Pam Emmerich, Kelly Hamilton, & Sara Knueve.
