<p> CITY OF WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION EMERGENCY TELECOMMUNICATION DISPATCHER</p><p>$55.00 Examination Application Fee Required</p><p>Last Date to Apply: September 15, 2017 Examination Date: September 23, 2017 Exam Location: Waltham Senior High School, 617 Lexington St., Waltham, MA 02452 Exam Time: 9:00 a.m.</p><p>PLEASE READ THIS EXAMINATION POSTER THOROUGHLY</p><p>This examination is held to establish a Civil Service eligibility list from which to fill vacancies for the position of Emergency Telecommunication Dispatcher (ETD) within the City of Waltham. Please be advised that the existing ETD list will be replaced with the new eligibility list on September 27, 2017. Exam starts at 9:00 am, there will be no admittance once the exam has begun.</p><p>EXAMINATION SUBJECTS: The written examination is designed to test the following: Ability to Listen, Remember and Respond to Verbal Information; Ability to Use Situational Judgement; Ability to Learn and Apply Information. The exam also uses simulated 911 calls and radio traffic to assess the critical abilities of candidates for entry-level public safety telecommunicator. </p><p>SCORE: To pass this open competitive exam you must achieve at least 75% on the listening section and a 70% on the written exam.</p><p>ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be a High School graduate or equivalent.</p><p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Ability to learn the operation of radios, telephones, computers and related communication equipment. Ability to pass a standardized typing test scoring no less than 30 words (error free) per minute. Ability to be certified on NCIC/LEAPS and ability to be certified in CPR and EMD. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely under emergency conditions orally and in writing. Must have the ability to learn city street locations and read maps. Ability to understand complex and written instructions and procedures. Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in filing and records retention and the ability to perform the duties of the position accurately and quickly under adverse and or emergency conditions. Ability to pass an in depth police background check. A CORI and drug and alcohol screening. </p><p>DUTIES: Under supervision from employees of higher grade; receives and transmits emergency calls by telephone, radio, or other signal system; relays information to police patrol cars, ambulances, fire apparatus, rescue squads, or other personnel and equipment as needed to handle all complaints and requests for assistance. Keep records of all activity related to the delivery of emergency services or other services required of the dispatch center. Conduct testing of emergency systems and make minor repairs as training allows. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by appropriate authority.</p><p>TO APPLY: Applications are available on-line at www.city.waltham.ma.us, in Human Resources, 119 School Street, Waltham and at the Police Station 155 Lexington Street. All applicants must be pre-registered, no walk-ins will be accepted the day of the exam. </p><p>Applications and payments must be returned to City Hall, Treasurer’s Office, 610 Main Street, Waltham with the $55.00 examination fee. Cash, check, money orders and credit cards (Mastercard, Discover and Visa) accepted. If you have any questions, please contact the Human Resources Department at 781-314-3355. Payment of the fee will not be accepted on the day of the examination all applicants must be pre-registered.</p><p>FEE WAIVER: The examination fee may be waived for candidates receiving certain state or federal public assistance, unemployment insurance, or workers' compensation. Waiver forms must be accompanied by proof of eligibility, for the subject time period, in the form of signed and dated receipts, check stubs and/or other documentation from the agency providing assistance. Waivers must be returned to and approved by Human Resources Department. Waivers of the fee will not be accepted on the day of the examination all applicants must be pre-registered.</p><p>SCHOOL OR PREPARATION SERVICE: The City does not support any school or service offering preparation for examinations and is not responsible for their advertising claims.</p><p>IDENTIFICATION AT THE EXAM SITE: At the examination site, applicants must present a current and valid photo identification with their signature, such as a current motor vehicle operator’s license, passport, military ID.</p><p>STARTING SALARY: Approximately $50,225 including night shift differential with excellent benefits. This is a union position and is required to participate in the Waltham Retirement Board’s public pension system. </p><p>VETERANS: DEFINITION OF A MASSACHUSETTS VETERAN M.G.L. Chapter 4, Section 7, Clause 43 as amended by the Acts of 2004 Effective August 30, 2004: To be a “veteran” under Massachusetts law, a person is required to have either 180 days of regular active duty service and a last discharge or release under honorable conditions OR 90 days of active duty service, one (1) day of which is during “wartime” and a last discharge or release under honorable conditions. A chart defining “wartime” service is available online at www.mass.gov/civilservice or www.mass.gov/veterans VETERANS’ PREFERENCE: If you are claiming veterans' preference you must submit a copy of your DD Form 214 Member-4 Form (Release From Active Duty-Long Form) in order to receive proper credit. Although you may supply this proof at any time during the life of the eligible list, it is recommended that you submit it at the time of the examination or immediately upon qualification. As of July 1, 1998, those who otherwise qualify for veterans' preference, but are still in military service may claim such credit by supplying proof, on official letterhead with appropriate signature, of their military service to date, including the dates of active duty, current assignment, and estimated time of separation. The individual must provide official documentation of honorable discharge at the time of appointment. See MGL Ch. 31, §3, Clause (f).</p><p>TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: If you need special testing accommodations due to a documented impairment such as a hearing, learning, physical, mental or visual disability, fill in item #2 on the paper application form. You must also submit a letter of support from a qualified professional detailing what type of accommodation you require at the exam site. Without such a letter, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to grant your accommodation. This information is requested only to provide reasonable accommodation for exams, and will not be used for any other purposes. </p><p>NO MAKE-UP EXAMINATION: With the exception of current military personnel as described above, no candidate has a right to a make-up examination due to personal or professional conflicts on the testing date. Candidates are advised to consider this BEFORE applying for the examination. There will be no refunds of exam fee. </p><p>CREDIT FOR TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE - Pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 31 Individuals may apply to receive credit for employment or experience in the position title. Information on how to apply for this credit will be in the Human Resources Department. All claims must provide specific details of any employment or experience you have in the examination title as the result of service, including dates of service and number of hours worked per week, and must be accompanied by documentation supporting these claims. Please note, credit for employment or experience is applicable only to individuals who achieve a passing score on the written examination, and cannot be added to a failing written examination score. Claims and supporting documentation must be submitted at the exam site, or postmarked within 7 calendar days of the written examination. </p><p>For additional information see 1.
