Feliciano, Human Relations Specialist, Board Secretary Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce Member: Rose-Nancy Joseph, President/Chairwoman</p><p>Welcome and Introductions Patricia Newton called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. Introductions were made and everyone signed the sign-in sheet. The President/Chairwoman of the Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce, Rose-Nancy Joseph, was introduced and welcomed by the Board.</p><p>Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce Rose-Nancy Joseph provided the Board with an overview of the Greater Haitian American Chamber, informing the Board that the largest Haitian population is in Pine Hills, South Orange County and in the downtown Orlando Parramore community. There is a concentration of Haitian residents also in Seminole and Osceola counties, along with a growing number of Caribbean groups coming to Orlando. She also informed the Board that the Chamber’s primary focus for 2014 is recruitment and to revitalize the chamber. The chamber is increasing its visibility in Seminole, Osceola and Brevard counties. </p><p>Brainstorm/Discussion on Community Focus Group Meetings The Board agreed to hold several “Know Your Rights” community meetings and partner with the Greater Haitian American Chamber to host a meeting in a church, on Haitian television, Haitian radio and at a chamber’s networking gathering. Rose-Nancy Joseph stated that the number one discrimination complaint amongst the Haitian community is age discrimination. Patricia Newton shared that the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) would like to join the Board in its outreach to the Haitian community with a focus on Orlando’s hospitality industry.</p><p>50 th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act The Board agreed to convene on Thursday, December 19, 2014, at 9 a.m. to plan an activity for the upcoming celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. The Board also discussed seeking partnerships with the Holocaust Resource & Education Center and the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. Upcoming City Events Board members were reviewed on upcoming event dates.
