VA Grant Awarded to Illinois Veterans Homes

<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 17, 2002</p><p>VA Grant Awarded to Illinois Veterans Homes WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded nine grants totaling nearly $7.3 million to the state of Illinois for renovation, construction and system upgrades at the state veterans homes in Manteno, LaSalle and Quincy. "These grants reflect the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who served in uniform," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "This partnership allows more veterans to receive the respect and care that they have earned." The grants will pay for up to 65 percent of the total costs of nine specific projects in the state's veterans homes:  $3,802,500 for a special care unit in Manteno;  $2,421,250 for a therapy building in Quincy;  $299,839 for a medical gas system in Quincy;  $293,354 to improve handicapped access in Quincy;  $246,350 for a special care unit in LaSalle;  $75,754 for a medical gas system in LaSalle;  $72,192 to improve handicapped access in Manteno;  $51,118 for a walk-in freezer in Quincy; and  $26,081 to improve handicapped access in LaSalle. The state of Illinois operates veterans homes in Anna, LaSalle, Manteno and Quincy. To qualify, veterans must have entered the military from Illinois or have been a state resident for at least a year before applying.
