Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science Midterm Exam

The midterm exam is designed not only to assess your understanding of theories we have been discussing, but also to help further develop your understanding by requiring you to apply these theories to the design of a learning environment. When you design new lessons in the Classroom Interactions course, you will similarly be expected to draw on theory.

NOTE: You may bring one side of one standard-sized page of notes with you to the exam. Instructions

Choose two specific theories we have studied this semester in Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science. Describe the theory. Discuss at least five of the most important elements of the theory. Describe an instance of student STEM learning (from the viewpoint of strands of mathematics or science proficiency) and use the theory to explain that learning. Describe a lesson whose design is informed through the theory (including the actions of the students, the tools or materials used). What research or literature supports the validity of the theory?

October 2014 Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science Midterm Exam

Midterm Scoring Rubric

For the two specific theories:

5 Describe the theory.

20 Discuss at least five of the most important elements of the theory.

10 Describe an instance of student STEM learning (from the viewpoint of strands of mathematics or science proficiency) and use the theory to explain that learning.

5 Describe a lesson whose design is informed through the theory (including the actions of the students, the tools or materials used).

10 What research or literature supports the validity of the theory?

50 TOTAL

Comments:

October 2014 2
