The Answers Blowing in the Wind Around Sussex

‘Revolutionary’ workshops for Brighton Science Festival

Throughout January Dr Jonathan Hare and Richard Robinson are running 30 windmill workshops in schools around Sussex as part of the run-up to the Brighton Science Festival: 21 - 28th February 2009 [1].

Two years ago Dr Hare ran similar windmill workshops as part of the COAST TV series activities for the Open University [2]. He prototyped a cheap and simple windmill design which proved a great success with both teachers and pupils. Details of how to make this windmill are on his CSC web site [3] and are recommended for school and science club activities. A short 3 minute mini-film demonstrating and explaining three different types of windmill, including this design, can be viewed on the Vega Trust web site [4].

In the Brighton Science Festival workshops children find out just how creative science can be when they design, prototype, test and modify their own wind turbines - a device to turn wind into rotational energy. With only card, bamboo sticks, plastic cups and plates etc. they discover that there are many exciting possibilities. With the electricity they create from their wind turbines they must try to power a buzzer, calculator, LED torch and even a radio. The only problem is getting the children to pack-up as they want to go on and on experimenting. One teacher said “The feedback from the pupils was amazing. They absolutely loved it and it has inspired us as a department to really start thinking that these challenging, yet fun, activities need to be included in our new schemes of work.”

For the full range of Brighton Science Festival activities log onto the website. There two special family days on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd February.

Useful references and web links 1) www.brightonscience.com 2) http://blast.open.ac.uk/ 3) http://www.creative-science.org.uk/8blade.html 4) http://vega.org.uk/video/subseries/27
