The desire for improved fuel economy through increased transmission efficiency has led to the development of lower-viscosity grades. At 20°C, an SAE 75W-90 lubricant would have a much lower viscosity than a traditional SAE 85W-140 lubricant.

[Video footage] A golden, viscous liquid being poured into a clear dish.

[Text displays] Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90

[Video footage] A clear, slightly less viscous liquid being poured into a clear dish. A dial on the contraption shows RPM.

The image fades but remains just visible behind a misty grid. Two purple rectangles containing a smaller image of the gearbox appear in upper left and lower right of screen.

[Text displays] The upper left image reads: Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90.

A temperature reading shows at top of image: 22.2°C

The lower right image reads: Spirax S2 A 85W-140

A temperature reading shows at top of image: 22.1°C

[Voiceover] On the left, the demonstration gearbox is filled with Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90...

[Video footage] The upper image and text flash white to draw attention to them.

[Voiceover] ...and on the right Spirax S2 A 85W-140.

[Video footage] The lower image and text flash white to draw attention to them.

[Text displays] 4 min 30 sec

[Voiceover] For this demonstration, the lightly-loaded gearbox is run at 2,000 RPM for 50 minutes.

[Video footage] The images within the purple boxes show thermal imaging of heat build-up in the gearboxes containing Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 and Spirax S2 A 85W-140 under identical operating conditions and at different time intervals.

After 4 min 30 seconds, Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 temperature hasn’t changed, while Spirax S2 A 85W- 140 temperature increases to 23.6°C and then 25.8°C.

After 7 minutes, Spirax S S6 AXME 75W-90 temperature has risen to 22.6°C, while Spirax S2 A 85W-140 temperature has risen to 29.0°C. Over a 40-minute time period, temperatures continue to climb to 23.3°C and 33.5°C, then 24.4°C and 38.9°C, 27.3°C and 40.5C°, and, finally, 30.9°C and 42.0°C respectively.

[Voiceover] Once warmed up, the maximum temperature reached using the SAE 85W-140 oil was 45°C.

[Voiceover] The maximum temperature reached using the SAE 75W-90 oil was 32°C. [Video footage] The lower image and text flash white to draw attention to them. Temperature reached is 32.1°C for Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90.

[Voiceover] After 52 minutes the input speed was accelerated to 3,000 RPM, which led to a further increase in temperature. Once the gearbox is fully warmed up, the temperature of the more viscous SAE 85W-140 oil is approximately 10°C higher than that of the SAE 75W-90.

[Video footage] After 52 minutes, Spirax S S6 AXME 75W-90 temperature has risen to 33.5°C, while Spirax S2 A 85W- 140 temperature has risen to 47.5°C. Temperatures continue to climb to 36.2°C and 49.2°C, then 39.9°C and a steady 49.2°C respectively after one hour and 20 minutes.

[Voiceover] This temperature difference is due to the lower friction of the SAE 75W-90 oil.

[Video footage] The purple boxes are replaced by a line graph. The Y axis shows 50°C temperature in ten-degree increments and the X axis shows 90 minutes in 10-minute intervals. A yellow line plots Spirax S2 A 85W-140 and a red line plots Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 from zero to 90 minutes. Spirax 85W-140 is 10°C higher after 90 minutes.

[Voiceover] Filming the perspex gearbox with an ultra-high-speed video camera enables oil flow visualisation. Choosing a high-performing, low-viscosity Shell Spirax lubricant can offer cooler operation, higher gearbox efficiencies and improved fuel economy as compared to traditional high-viscosity oils.

[Text displays] Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90

[Video footage] Slowed-down footage of full gearbox, gears in motion, with the clear lubricant flowing throughout the machinery.

Slowed-down close-up of the tops of several gears.
