Using CogAT Scores for Elementary Academically/Intellectually Gifted Screening and Placement

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) provides educators with separate reports in three different batteries along with a total composite score. These scores can be utilized in the following ways:

To identify students for READING: ▸ Verbal AGE percentile of 90 or higher ▸ Total COMPOSITE Score meeting Pathway criteria ▸ Partial COMPOSITE score of VERBAL and NON-VERBAL together of 90%ile (see Norms Reference Book)

To identify students for MATH: ▸ Quantitative AGE percentile of 90 or higher ▸ Total COMPOSITE score meeting Pathway criteria ▸ Partial COMPOSITE score of QUANTITATIVE and NON-VERBAL together of 90%ile (see Norms Reference Book)

Best Practice:

If a student has a high non-verbal score, but a low verbal and quantitative score, then the following is recommended:

1. Proceed with reviewing achievement scores and grades after consulting with regular education / AIG Program Team. 2. If high abilities are present in achievement, then proceed with requesting a Naglieri Non-Verbal Test. Submit a NNAT request form to the AIG Office for review and approval.

Best Practice:

▸ Aptitude must match achievement for specific identification. ▸ V or V + N or C = Reading Aptitude Criteria ▸ Q or Q + N or C = Math Aptitude Criteria

ES Section 7, Page 11 & 12 Formula for Calculating Partial Composites:

1. Locate the Universal Scale Score (USS) for each battery. This is a three digit number. 2. You will need to consider the following

▸ V + NV = Partial Composite / Reading or ▸ Q + NV = Partial Composite / Math

3. Add the two USS scores together and divide by 2. This number represents the partial composite USS score. 4. Reference the CogAT Norms Book to determine Universal Scale Score to Grade Percentile Rank, Fall Norms. Table #25 (V + N) or Table #29 (Q + N) Be sure to use the column for Grade 4. 5. Locate the USS score for the partial composite and line up with the percentile for that score. 6. Determine if the student has met the criteria based on PARTIAL COMPOSITE.

Example: V = 84% Q = 59% NV = 99% C = 92%

(V) USS / 84% = 200 (NV) USS / 99% = 245

Total = 445 divided by 2 = 225.5 This score calculates to a 98%. This score can be used for READING placement.

ES Section 7, Page 11 & 12
