Spread Christianity b. Civilize the Africans (since they weren’t “civilized” they were meant to be slaves)</p><p>5. How did their exploration influence the development of the slave trade? - Europeans found that they could trade their cheap goods for slaves, liked that a lot - They would pay Africans to hunt down their own people, - Since the Africans were afraid of the explorers, (they thought they were cannibals) they seemed in the Europeans’ eyes to be unintelligent and meant to be slaves</p><p>6. Slavery was based on power and economics. </p><p>7. Describe the journey to the coast for the slaves that were captured. - they were forced to walk a LONG way, many without shoes - put in chains - Babies and the elderly were left behind 8. What were the conditions on the slave ships like? Give at least 4 examples. - No room! Would have to lay side by side, sometimes in the weirdest of positions to fit – and the journey took 8 weeks! - no bathrooms (floors covered with feces and mucous) - gasping for air (not enough oxygen for candles to burn) - hot - Fed in troughs - Disease - It stunk</p><p>9. What happened to the slaves who had a disease or was suspected of disease once on the ship? - thrown overboard</p><p>10.How did Africans resist slavery? - Revolt (mutinies) - Amistad – tore iron off of door to use to resist the Europeans</p><p>11.How were slaves treated in the markets once they arrived in the New World? - Stripped and hosed down - Oiled up to be sold (oil would show the muscle definition) - At market, buyer comes in and sees nude slaves – would look at their bodies to decide which was the fittest - Put in a pen (like livestock) buyers would come to choose their slave.</p><p>12.What did the slaves bring to the New World? - Brought advanced farming techniques</p><p>13.How did slaves help build the economy of America? - They raised the tobacco, cotton and sugar crops that helped build the American economy.</p>
