CSPCWG 1-8B

Magenta tint bands

Submitted by: CSPCWG Chairman

Executive summary: In areas where numerous magenta limits may be confusing, some HOs give prominence to selected limits by highlighting with a magenta tint band. Does CSPCWG endorse this practice, and intend to include in M-4?

Actions to be taken: Discuss issues at the CSPCWG 1 meeting

Related documents: INT1

Related Projects: None

1. Introduction / Scope. The increasing number of regulatory and other limits shown in magenta on some charts can result in some limits which are important from a safety point of view becoming unclear. Some HOs have used a magenta tint band to highlight selected magenta limits, similar to that used for PSSAs.

2. Analysis/Discussion. This practice has the advantage of highlighting the area, and also allowing the limit to be visible, even when the symbol is broken because it conflicts with another different limit. Examples used by the UKHO include Precautionary Areas (e.g. Admiralty Chart 2052) and Mine Danger Areas (e.g. Admiralty Chart 3774). However, overuse would be self-defeating.

Another option is to vary the size and weight of the magenta dashes to give extra prominence and using larger and bolder type for associated legends.

3. Resource implication. No additional resource implications, except to produce a specification in M-4.

4. Benefits. Clarity for the user in regard to important detail, in a day when the chart is becoming increasingly loaded with regulatory detail.

5. Working Groups. Notification to C&SMWG through routine correspondence.

6. Any other relevant information not covered elsewhere. N/A

7. Justification. See Annex A. N/A

8. Target completion date. With immediate effect.

9. Related activities and dependencies N/A

10. Action Required. Decision on whether CSPCWG endorses this practice and wishes to include it in M-4 (probably in B-439 Restricted and Non-Restricted Areas).

1
