WELCOME EARTHLINGS... Introduction At 9 o'clock this morning, as you were walking into your Math class, a huge silver UFO overheated and crashed onto the football field!

As the dust and steam settled, a silver sliding door opened and 3 aliens from the planet Nomathus crawled out.

While the unsuspecting students were changing classes, the devious aliens crept down the ramp to explore the strange new planet they found themselves on. They made their way to your classroom and stood in the doorway to your classroom. By the time their UFO cools down enough for them to take off again, you are going to have the opportunity to teach them a lesson: COMPLETING THE SQUARE.`

Task You are going to do two things for this WebQuest: • Complete the problems of the online worksheets using Completing the Square with a partner.

• You are going to come up with a fun way to teach 3 aliens from the planet Nomathus about Completing the Square.

Process 1. First get a general background of Completing the Square by watching and taking notes on the following web sites and resources....

http://plus.maths.org/issue29/features/quadratic/index.html

http://classroom.synonym.com/everyday-examples-situations-apply- quadratic-equations-10200.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnxWXarD1Tw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mny7U_LOY8c

http://www.teachertube.com/video/visualizing-completing-the-square-with- commentary-113263 2. With your partner, complete the worksheets found below. Each partner needs their own paper to turn in with all work shown:

http://betterlesson.com/lesson/resource/2852986/completing-the-square- worksheet-1

http://pdfs.cpm.org/skillBuilders/AC/AC_Extra_Practice_Section24.pdf

Your work will be collected, so be sure to write every step down.

3. Now decide for yourself what parts of Completing the Square are important to teach. Make a list of concepts, facts, principles and procedures that are important to know about Completing the Square for the aliens. 4. Decide how you will tailor the lesson for the aliens. How will you deal with the limitations of their vocabulary and previous experience? Why would they want to learn how to Complete the Square? Make sure these are included in your lesson. Here are some ideas for you to consider: • Provide a glossary • Discuss the history behind, or current applications of Completing the Square • Create a fun means of memorizing the formula • Show the aliens how to carry out the steps to solving a quadratic using Completing the Square (but be careful not to bore them!) • Come up with a metaphor that relates the new information to something they might be familiar with. • Think about ways to make Completing the Square more interesting by singing songs or acting out a skit. Check out these sites for some more ideas!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGJrH49Z2ZA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ehmSJTSBuk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8iE4wFi_Pc

5. Write out a summary of your proposed lesson. Be sure to include a way to introduce it, a part in which new information is provided, a time in which the aliens practice what they've learned and get feedback, and an opportunity to tie it all together. Be sure to include lots of interaction between you and the aliens.

6. Create the final product and practice your lesson with other members of your class before teaching it to the aliens from Nomathus. Even if the others happen to be from another planet, like the aliens from Nomathus! Tomorrow we will begin teaching the aliens our lessons. Hopefully, you enjoyed learning about Completing the Square and are ready to learn some more. Unfortunately, the UFO has cooled off and the aliens are ready to return to the planet of Nomathus (along with their knowledge of Earth and Completing the Square).

Credits I would like to thank Nichole Raiewski and Ms.Correa and Ms.Hilton of O'Farrell Community Middle School for the content on this webpage.
