Two General Types Of Energy: Kinetic And Potential

Two General Types of Energy: Kinetic and Potential

In the boxes below draw pictures to illustrate kinetic energy (energy of motion or energy in use) and potential energy (stored energy).

Kinetic Energy: electrical, light, mechanical (a bike), nuclear (the Sun), thermal (heat)

Potential Energy: a battery, food, wood, rock on a hill, water behind a dam, spring Draw the picture of the boy juggling the orange on page 362. Label the balls 5 positions in terms of kinetic and potential energy. The higher the ball the less the kinetic energy and the greater the potential energy and the lower the ball the greater the kinetic energy and lower the potential energy. When the ball is stopped in his hand it has some potential energy and no kinetic energy.

Draw the pendulum on page 362. Label each position of the pendulum as high or low kinetic and potential energy based on the position of the pendulum.

State the law of energy conservation (page 363) and describe how energy is being conserved in the pendulum as it swings back and forth between kinetic and potential energy.
