<p>Unit Title: Human Relations Grade Level: 10 Topic: Habit 6- Synergize* Lesson Sequence: 1 of 2</p><p>Lesson Objectives: Students will understand the concept of achieving synergy when two or more people work together on a problem to create a better solution than either could alone.</p><p>EALRs Addressed: Communications: 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 Reading: 2.1, 3.1 Writing: 1.2, 2.2</p><p>Special Materials: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens – one copy for each student</p><p>Special Preparations: In advance, read Habit 6 – “Synergize” (p. 181) from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens / make copies of the Synergy Handout and the Synergy’s A-List Handout for each student.</p><p>Time Activity Procedures Supplies Quickly review the “Win-Win” and Active 5 – 10 minutes Presentation Listening concepts. Remind student that both 7 Habits Book for or Discussion of them are an important part of this lesson. each student</p><p>Read or just tell students the information on pg 182. Ask for examples in nature or Synergy Handout society.</p><p>Discuss quotes: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. – Helen Keller</p><p>“Collaboration is multiplication.” - Maxwell</p><p>Review definition of synergy: Etymology: New Latin synergia, from Greek synergos = working together. 1. SYNERGISM; broadly: combined action or operation 2. 2. a mutually advantageous conjunction</p><p>Looking at the Synergy Handout (with the tree roots), explain how this represents synergy. (Read over the text and explain any unfamiliar vocabulary.) Divide students into 8 groups and assign each Synergy’s A-List 10-15 minutes Group Activity group one of the topics from “Synergy’s A- Handout List” (handout) to review, discuss and prepare for presentation (2 minutes each?). Some information can be found in the Habit 6 Chapter 9 (p. 181), but they will need to come </p><p>1 up with some info on their own.</p><p>Each group will present their part of the list the next day. It can be a role-play, a drawing, a narrative, etc. Encourage them to be creative. What does Steven Covey mean by 1 + 1 = 3? 7 Habits books 5 minutes Group (pgs. 181 and 193-195.) Discussion and Ask for examples in our daily lives. Review Discuss: You can sidestep negative energy. Valuing differences is the essence of synergy.
