Total import of petrol was around 19 billions Icelandic kronas in the year 2001. That is about 218.5 million Euros. Most of the petrol which is used in Iceland is importet from the United States, Great Britain but the biggest part of it is imported from Russia. In Iceland, oil is used for fuelling cars, cargo- and fishing ships, airplanes and another construction vehicles. In Iceland is a lot of natural hot water which is easy to pump up from the earth. Therefore Icelanders don’t have to use oil for heating up their houses, like it is done in many other countries. The inhabitants of Iceland are very few as you might know. Even thoug there are only 280.000 inhabitants in Iceland there still are about 180.000 cars. Therefore is a about 0,64 cars for every inhabitant of Iceland. In large societies, like for an example Hamburg the consequence would be lot of pollution, but in Iceland the small number of people makes up for the pollution. </p>
