Heroes motivate us. They captivate us into thinking about ways we can save others and make the world a better place. The story “Rama’s Initiation” by R. K. Narayan has one such hero – Rama. As a young boy, Rama demonstrates compassion and boldness in order to save his people from peril.

Rama’s compassion and boldness fit the hero archetype. He is bold. For example, when

Rama is about to kill Thataka, he hesitates because she is a woman. This shows Rama must have been raised to respect the women of his family and kingdom. This also shows that even in a life threatening situation he’s able to think instead of panicking, and this will save lives if he’s to be a future King. Beyond this, Rama has to make a bold decision to kill Thataka with his bow and arrow, and he does this based on Sage Viswamithra’s advice that she is no lady , but a monster. This shows Rama’s willing to kill evil in order to save humanity, and most people would run away from such a threat. Rama’s courage is rare, and it would inspire the ancient people as well as readers today.

NOW, go back to the passage and: - SUBSTITUTE ONE OVERUSED WORD-circle it as well as your replacement (examples: good, very, things, really, a lot, BE verbs – am, is, are, was, were…etc.).

-TAKE THINGS OUT: Cross out ONE UNIMPORTANT OR REPETITOUS piece of info.

-ADD: ONE PIECE OF DETAIL, CLARIFICATION, DESCRIPTION, or NEW INFORMATION- and box it.

-REARRANGE for logical flow IF NECESSARY; if not, leave it the way it is.
