Dust storms of “biblical proportions” turned SS prairies into deserts and unleashed a massive, deadly pattern that for many seemed to herald gre CON the end of the world. It was the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history. f O ry A r IB Through 26 first-hand testimonies of survivors, seldom-seen movie footage, previously f l O y S e unpublished photographs, and more, Burns and co-producer Dayton Duncan captured stories T ur CO of heroic perseverance against enormous odds, providing a historical account of what happened ; SS gre and why on the southern Plains during the farming boom of the early 20th century. CON f O ry “It was as if nature itself had turned against them. But in fact it was the other way around: We A r IB had tried to impose our will on nature and the results were catastrophic,” Duncan explained. ge — l AN l A “The Dust Bowl was a heartbreaking tragedy in the enormous scale of human suffering it caused. he OT r But perhaps the biggest tragedy is that it was preventable,” said Burns. “This was an ecosystem DO f O y S — a grassland — that had evolved over millions of years to adjust to the droughts, high winds and e T ur CO violent weather extremes so common to that part of the country. In the space of a few decades at eum; S the start of the 20th century, that grassland was uprooted in the middle of a frenzied wheat boom. e mu When a drought returned, all that exposed soil took to the skies, and people worried that the ADOB IC r breadbasket of the nation would become the next Sahara desert. If we show the same neglect to ISTO f h the limits of nature now as we did then, it is entirely possible that this could happen again.” O y S e T ur CO ; PBS treasures of new york: ocean keeper e/ OS ul gh O The Amagansett Life-Saving Station has been a h A f r unique centerpiece of Long Island history since O y S e T it was built in 1902.
