<p> Mr Portwood: Honors World History- Zionism & The Holocaust</p><p>Writing Assignment</p><p>The Writing Assignment is designed to familiarize you with reflective writing.</p><p>“It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost” Gibbs, (1988)</p><p>Reflective writing is descriptive writing, in which the writer, through analysis and introspection, describes an experience, event, idea, or memory, adding personal reflection on the meaning of the experience, event, interaction,or memory.</p><p>Read the background guide for Schindler’s List</p><p>After viewing the film, write a reflection by answering one of the following questions to consider:</p><p>1. The significance of the story is determined by the power of its comment on the human condition. What comment is being made in this movie about what it is to be human? </p><p>2. The theme of a story is the general idea or insight about life expressed by the author. Theme is a universal and meaningful concept that emerges from the characters' actions and from the outcomes of conflicts described in the story. Theme is often thought of as the lesson that the author is trying to teach the reader or audience. More than one theme can be included in a work of fiction; however, there is usually one primary theme that ties together all of the elements of a story. What is the primary or central theme of this story?</p><p>3. Many stories explore important social or political issues. Describe any specific social or political issues that affect the story. How do these issues impact characters and influence theme? </p><p>4. What life lessons can be learned from the choices made by the characters in this story?</p><p>5. What are the most dramatic issues relevant to our time that have been presented in this story? Describe the presentation of one such issue and show how it relates to the times in which we now live. Show how the movie attempts to persuade viewers to accept the particular values or principles that the writers intended to promote.</p><p>7. What was your personal reaction to the film? What did the film teach you?</p><p>Your reflection should be a minimum of 500 words, but no more than 750 words. You must use the MLA Writing Style to complete this assignment. You will need to use the appropriate format for citing from a film. Remember – formal academic papers must include in-text citations, a separate cover page, and a separate Works Cited page. In addition, all papers must be double spaced.</p><p>Please note the word count of the student-produced text ONLY on your Writing Assignment.
