GREAT BASIN COLLEGE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL October 4, 2005

PRESENT: Paul Killpatrick, Carl Diekhans, Mike McFarlane, Lynn Mahlberg, Danny Gonzales, Linda Uhlenkott, Lisa Heise, John Rice GUESTS: Penny Ronk, Ger Heise, Mike Popp

1. Approval of Minutes – The minutes of the President’s Council meeting on September 27, 2005 were approved.

2. Alumni/Student Insurance – Mike Popp, sales representative for Liberty Mutual, met with President’s Council to discuss an Alumni/Student Group Savings program for GBC students and alumni. Liberty Mutual offers this program to universities and community colleges around the country. Liberty Mutual will give a discount to students/alumni – 10% off of home insurance and 5% off of automobile insurance. GBC Alumni Association would receive 2% back on any new accounts and 1% back for renewals. The program will benefit alumni and the Alumni Association. Existing Liberty Mutual clients who are GBC alumni will be eligible for the discount. The benefit will be available to anyone who has taken a GBC course. Remember, the GBC employee discount is still 10% off of home insurance and 10% off of automobile insurance.

3. Gear Up – Lynn Mahlberg gave an update on the Gear Up Program. The program is administered by NSHE and the Department of Education. A cohort of underrepresented students from throughout Nevada is being tracked from the time they entered the program in the 7th grade until they graduate. The first group is now in the 11th grade. These students are succeeding; they’re doing better on the national test scores, and they are realizing that they can go to college. The program is heavily funded by business partners. Hopefully, the program can start again with a new group of 7th graders.

4. Tech Prep – Joint Agreement with NSHE & Dept. of Ed. – Lynn Mahlberg is a member of a system-wide committee that has been working to clarify/standardize the Tech Prep agreement. Ten years ago there was an agreement between GBC and all the high schools in our service area to accept articulated courses, but the credit was not filtering through. Anna Kincaid is now working at the high schools to ensure that the paperwork is filled out once the course is taken, so that the credit from these articulated courses is transferred. The next system-wide meeting is October 14, 2005.

5. NSHE Transfer Rights & Responsibilities – Lynn Mahlberg distributed copies of the NSHE Transfer Rights & Responsibilities for Students and Institutions. The summary will appear on every college and university web page within NSHE.

6.
