Geometry Real World Project

Name: ______

Geometry “Real – World” Project

Triangle Centers Project:

Using Google Maps or other Internet mapping websites, pick three locations of interest to you and print a picture of the map with these locations. On the printed map, draw a triangle between the locations you chose. Develop a storyline, which includes why one of the triangle centers that we have learned in class would be important information to know with reference to your locations. Sketch the construction of the specific triangle center used and show all markings for the segments you needed to draw (perpendicular bisectors, angle bisectors, medians or altitudes depending on which triangle center you chose). You must use a ruler and a protractor!

Parallel Lines/ Congruent Triangles Project:

Part 1: Using Internet images, find an image of construction, interior design, architecture, etc… anything that portrays parallel lines. Print the image and prove the lines are parallel by measuring the angles between them with a protractor. Develop an explanation of why in your particular example it is important for those lines to be parallel and how the contractors, designers or architects could prove parallelism on the job (be specific).

Part 2: Either as an extension of part 1 or as a complete new example, find an image of construction, interior design, architecture, etc…. anything that portrays congruent triangles. Print the image and prove the triangles are congruent using one of SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, or HL using a protractor or a ruler. Write an explanation of why in your particular example it is important for the contractor, designer, architect, etc. to know how to check for triangle congruence.

Presentation: You will mount your project on poster board (see rubric for what to include) and present your project to class. Each presentation must be at least 3 minutes long.

-Please include your rubric with your final project (hand it to me before your presentation). Name: ______

Geometry “Real – World” Project Rubric

All 3 Projects printed and mounted on poster /1

All explanations typed for each project /1

Colorful, neat, organized /1

Creativity of ideas for each project /4

Triangle Centers Project:

Triangle Center written story /5

Construction of triangle center is shown evidenced by the markings on the segments. /5

Parallel Line Project

Written explanation of the picture including why parallelism is important to your example. /5 (example: if construction, parallelism may be important to the structure and support of a building)

Prove that in your particular example the lines are /5 parallel using the parallelism theorems. Use a protractor to find angle measures.

Triangle Congruence Project:

Written explanation of the picture including why /5 triangle congruence is important in your example. (example: if architecture, why are congruence triangles important to the design of a project/building?)

Proof that your particular example show triangle /5 congruence. Use a protractor and ruler to measure the sides and angles. Stat which triangle congruence theorem is being used.

Presentation (at least 3 minutes):

Clear explanation of project ideas, good use of vocabulary, /3 knowledge of the material, etc.

Final Grade: /40
