I chose this poem because it made me think about winter and I really enjoy poems about nature. I like spending time in the outdoors and going skiing. When I read this poem, I could picture a man on a horse-drawn sleigh stopping on someone’s property to watch it snow. When I look at the snow, it is very beautiful so I can imagine someone else finding it mesmerizing to watch as well. I can also imagine that while the man is stopping to look at the snow, he starts to think about other things because I find it is very easy to become entranced and start to daydream sometimes. Overall I like this poem because it makes me think about winter and how beautiful snow can be.

I also chose this poem as one of my favorites because it rhymes, which makes it more fun to read aloud. Frost uses alliteration throughout the poem, including, “He gives his harness bells a shake” (Frost 9). I also notice that that last two lines of the poem repeat, which gives the poem a strong, yet calm ending. One example of figurative language in the poem is a metaphor. The miles the speaker has to go before he sleeps means he has a long way to go before he dies. This metaphor gives a slightly morbid tone to the poem. This shows the theme of the poem, which is that we cannot waste our life waiting; we must live life and keep the promises we make to others.

I think Robert Frost did an excellent job writing a thoughtful poem that uses many poetic devices.
