(C, G, H) 7.29 Trace the emergence of the Japanese nation during the Nara, 710-794, and the Heian periods, 794-1180. (H, P) 7.30 Describe how the Heian (contemporary Kyoto) aristocracy created enduring Japanese cultural perspectives that are epitomized in works of prose such as The Tale of Genji, one of the world’s first novels. (C, H) 7.31 Analyze the rise of a military society in the late twelfth century and the role of the shogun and samurai in that society. (C, H, P) </p><p>I Can Statements:. I can explain how China and the Korean peninsula influenced Japan. I can explain how the adoption of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Chinese writing system affected Japan. I can trace the emergence of the Japanese nation during the Nara period, 710-794. I can trace the emergence of the Japanese nation during the Heian period, 794-1180. I can describe the Heian aristocracy created enduring Japanese cultural perspective. I can describe the works of prose in The Tale of Genji one of the worlds first novels. Accommodations for students, both regular and special populations : I will make hard copies of all texts for students who need them. Students will be given guided notes for each standard. I will allow students to participate in class and group talks about articles before writing.
