Press Release: Parliamentarians at Council of Europe Call on Member States to Adopt

Press Release: Parliamentarians at Council of Europe call on member states to adopt whistleblower protection.

On 29 April 2010, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously passed a resolution for member states to have whistleblower protection. Dutch MP, Peter Omtzigt, introduced the resolution and called for protection that spans both private and public sectors and protects citizens from unfair dismissal, defamation and breaching official secrets.

The UK currently has whistleblower protection set out in the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA), which provides individuals with a remedy at employment tribunal if they are victimised or dismissed for raising a concern with their employer, the regulator and in some cases even with the media. In his report before PACE, Peter Omtzigt, praised PIDA and the UK for its approach to whistleblowing.

Francesca West, Senior Policy Officer at Public Concern at Work commented “Many countries in Europe don’t have whistleblower protection and the UK is lucky to have this. However, we shouldn’t be complacent and our recent report on “Where’s whistleblowing now” found only 22% of adults surveyed by YouGov were aware they had employment protection if they raise a concern and are victimised. We also find that on our helpline there has been a year on year increase and last year we received around 1700 calls.”

For comment, please contact Francesca West on 0207 404 6609.

NOTE TO EDITORS Public Concern at Work (PCaW) is the leading independent charity on whistleblowing. PCaW provides a free helpline for individuals who witness wrongdoing or malpractice at work and are unsure whether or how to raise their concern. PCaW also provides consultancy and support to help organisations manage risk responsibly.
