The veterinarians at the UF Veterinary Teaching Hospital diagnosed a heart murmur: moderate subaortic stenosis. Earlier, the doctors at the Archer Animal Hospital suspected the problem, as I notified you on February 25, 2002. At that time, I told you we were referred to the UF Vet School for a definite diagnosis.

As you see on the enclosed letter, her prognosis is poor. We plan to return to the Vet Hospital, as advised, in about a month for an additional evaluation. The doctor fears the prognosis may worsen as she grows.

I enclosed the various medical documents so that you may have your own vet examine them, if you wish.

The UF vet verbally advised us that Daisy’s mother probably should not have been bred – and certainly should not be bred again. You may want to discuss that with your doctor. Whether the same advice applies to Daisy’s father, I am not sure. However, I recommend you discuss this with his owner/breeder. I understand a study is being conducted regarding cardiomyopathy in Great Danes – through the Great Dane Health Foundation. You can locate it at: http://www.gdhfa.org/. The study will attempt to locate the defective gene though a dog’s family, ancestors, siblings, and such. I believe we should both participate, as should the father’s owner. I do not know whether it includes the cardiologist consultation. Together, these should bring the current total to five or six hundred dollars. The second visit will likely bring the total to between nine hundred and one thousand. The puppy package is something we will need to incur again for a new puppy. Vickey would prefer not to have a male. Thus we would like to accept a new female from your next litter. I understand that may take several months. If possible, I’d like Scott to be able to make a choice. We would also like to keep Daisy despite her problems. We would agree to waive any other rights we may have under F.S. 828.29 in exchange for not having to return her. I appreciate your concerns and thank you for calling me back promptly.

Very truly yours,

Steven J. Willis
