Volleyball Study Guide

BASIC SKILLS Offense: Pass — Contact the ball on the wrists and forearms with hands together. Set — Contact the ball overhead with the pads of the fingers. Spike — Jump up and hit the ball with an open hand. Tip — Jump up and gently push or direct the ball over the net. Serve — Stand behind the court and hit the ball overhand or underhand with one hand, into the opponent’s court.

Defense: Dig- a defensive pass off of a spike or tip. Block — Jump up at the net and put both hands up, and close together, in an effort to form a "wall" that prevents a spike from crossing the net.

SERVING When rally scoring, the game goes to 25 points, win by 2. If the match goes to a third game, play to 15, win by 2. A match is 2 out of 3 games. When using rally scoring, a point is scored on EVERY SERVE. Points may be scored any of the following ways: *the ball hits the floor of the opponent’s court inbounds *the opponents cannot return the ball in three hits *the opponents hit the ball out-of-bounds *the opponents commit a fault (foul)

The server serves from behind the baseline and may serve from anywhere along the baseline, but not outside the sidelines of the court.(marked by small markers) A server gets only one attempt to serve the ball over the net during each point. If the ball hits the net on the serve and does not go over, the serve is no good resulting in a side-out. If the ball hits the net and goes over, play continues. A "SIDE OUT" results when the receiving team has earned the opportunity to serve. A serve is good when the ball enters the opponent’s court without a service fault. A service fault would be any of the following:

*ball goes under net *ball touches the antenna or overhead obstruction *ball lands out-of-bounds *ball hits a teammate before crossing the net

The server continues to serve every serve until the other team wins the right to serve. Players rotate one position to the right (clockwise) each time the opponents lose service and their team regains service. Teams change sides after each game and the team that was receiving at the end of the previous game starts as the serving team.

RULES It is a violation to: Touch the net at any time while the ball is in play. Step completely over the center line. Carry the ball. (or throw the ball) Double hit: either by using both hands separately to pass, or by allowing the ball to hit your body more than once (arms and chest, for example) Hit the ball more than 3 times on a side, excluding the block. Have one player hit the ball twice in a row, excluding the block. Reach completely over the net to play the ball, unless the other team has already had the opportunity for three hits. Serve out of order. To be out of order on the court when the serve is contacted.

Women’s net height is approximately 7’4". Men’s and coed net height is approximately 8’0" The 10 foot line is used to keep back row players from spiking and blocking at the net. A ball that lands on a line, is IN.

PLAY Once the ball has been served, players can move about on their side of the net but cannot step completely over the center line.

The ball may be spiked (hit sharply downward into the opponents’ court from a jump position). Front line players may spike the ball from anywhere on the court. Back-line players may only spike from behind the attack line.

Each team may contact the ball three times before returning it over the net. The ideal offensive strategy is to pass-set-spike. The first contact is called a pass. A pass to a teammate nearer the net to attempt a spike is called a set.

A player may not hit the ball two times in succession. When two players on the same team touch the ball at the same time, it counts as one hit and either player may play the ball next.

A ball stopped between opposing players is to be replayed.

An attack hit (a ball aimed into the opponents’ court) can be made by front-line players at any time. Back-line players can make an attack hit when behind the attack line or in front of the line if the ball is lower than the top of the net. Serves are not attack hits.

The ball can touch the top of the net and enter the opponents’ court, even on a serve.

PLAYER POSITIONS

NET

Left front Center front Right front

Left back Center back Right back

Players do not have to stay in their court area after the ball has been served. 6 players are on the court from one team during the game. Players rotate clockwise before each new server.
