Automata: Moving Toys in the Classroom

Clohe P2 Report of Workshop for teachers

Partner organisation: Alivola (P2)

Trainers: Guido Accascina e Luca De Pascalis

Nr of attendees: 12 persone

Profession of the participants : 2 teachers, 1 Archeological Museum Director, 2 Museum employees, 3 Artists, 1 communication experrt, 3 other stakeholders

Date and duration : Novemner 8 2012, / 9,00 to 15,30

1. Objectives: The main objective is that school teachers (and other stakeholders) may realize the potential of the instrument "automata in the classroom" from the literary, artistic and engineering point of view. At the end of the workshop we want them "inside" the project and feeling part of the Clohe group.

2. Activities: We use an inductive method of teaching, as a result of the Clohe workshop in Bremen. Teachers Clohe show two automata whose mechanism is hidden. We ask everyone to guess the mechanism, drawing the various hypotheses on the logbook. We give everyone the materials needed to test various hypotheses in practice. Each one designs and builds his automata. If and when they absolutely need, they can go to see some examples of automata already made, hidden behind a screen. When the automata are complete, we ask everyone to present his work, highlighting problems and results.

3. Evaluation from the teachers: See file:///C:/Users/User/Documents/Web/alivola_aprile/00-CLOHE-EN-Piloting-Alivola-1-Teachers %20feedback.htm

4. What went well: everyone has reached the goal, a good job, new forms, great fun. The main point is that school teachers are now "inside" the project and feel part of the group Clohe. The inductive method applied to a group produces positive tensions that become inventions and competition in the best sense of the term.

5. What can be improved: Time: with more time and a one-week seminar we could have done to make all participants a deeper experience. We need to make "automata" an academic subject, as it is now the music.

6.
