<p>Bunsen Burner Lab: Soda Cans </p><p>Conduct and complete the write-up of the following experiment. Your write-up must be on a separate piece of paper; and you MUST include the proper HEADINGS on your paper corresponding to each of the HEADINGS below. </p><p>PRE-LAB QUESTION: a) Define explode b) Define implode. c)Define Inverted d) With a balloon, when it’s inflated, the air pressure is greater inside the balloon then the surrounding air. So, when you ‘pop’ a balloon what happens?</p><p>HYPOTHESIS: If I heat up the air inside a soda can using, then the air molecules inside the can will (gain/loose) energy.</p><p>MATERIALS: (List all Materials you need for this lab.)</p><p>PROCEDURES: 1. In the soda can, using a graduated cylinder pour in approximately 20 ml of water. 2. Using tongs, place the can on the tripod over the Bunsen burner. Ignite the burner. 3. Bring the water in the can to a full boil so that you see a lot of steam escaping. 4. Using the tongs, or oven mitt, QUICKLY invert the can in a bucket of water. 5. Record your observations. </p><p>DATA: </p><p>PROCEDURE VISUAL OBSERVATION Before the can is heated While the can is heated When the can is inverted in water</p><p>ANALYSIS : </p><p>What happened to the can? Did it explode or implode when placed in the water.</p><p>CONCLUSION: </p><p>From what you know about phase changes and the phase change diagram, did the heated AIR (inside the soda can) have more kinetic energy or less kinetic energy?</p><p>Were the air molecules in the heated can moving more rapidly or less rapidly then the surrounding air? When the can was inverted in water, and the air molecules were cooled, did they still have as much energy as when they were heated? What happened to the air pressure inside the can as a result of this rapid cool-down procedure?.</p>
