Timeline and detail of negotiation

Date: 8 February 2011

Morning: I went to Montessori Children’s Academy to see Ms. Carol Mpsitsi, The Principal of the school. Eve was already in touch with her and was expecting us to take her a teacher. After our discussion, she wanted to see Esther Namulindwa’s CV which we had previously given her. I called Esther that morning and she immediately travelled from Jinja and arrived in the afternoon.

Afternoon:

Esther Arrived from Jinja and I took her to meet Carol. Carol was happy with her and told her about the school and what her roles would be. She was asked to pick a day before elections, where she would go to the school to familiarize herself with the system. Later, the day we picked was Friday 11th February 2011, where she would have to report by 7:00 am. Otherwise official reporting day is 23rd February 2011, AFTER Presidential Elections.

3. Details of Discussion

3.1 Roles and Responsibilities: 1  There was particularly a need for a Personal Tutor for one of the students who should be going to Secondary school but is not ready. So his parents requested for a personal Tutor. Carol was impressed with Esther’s CV due to the fact that she has A Degree in Secondary Education. Besides that, the subjects she has studied especially Christian and Religious Education (C. R. E.) were very relevant and very important to the student’s parents, who are devote Christians. Apart from this student, Esther would also be required to attend some other few children with special needs.

 In addition to Esther’s education background, her Marketing and Public relations skills acquired at her current job as Marketing officer were impressive and therefore Carol suggested she would be involved in other roles such as liaison between the school and British Council.

3.2 Terms and conditions of appointment

Contract:

 A general Job Contract from Ministry of Education was given to me but Carol is yet to make one specific to what is expected of Esther. This is expected on Friday 11 February 2011.

 The initial contract will be a 3-4 months probation (1school term) but can be extended to another term if there are still doubts about her performance.

Salary:

 Esther will have a net pay of 500,000 UGX, after a negotiation from 350,000 UGX. Esther’s salary expectation had been a net pay of 300,000 UGX.

 After fixing the net pay at 500,000 UGX. Calculations were done backwards to get her Gross pay (650,000 UGX), Pay As You Earn taxes (117,500 UGX) and NSSF (32,500 UGX).

Benefits:

There are:

 Free Education for children or dependants

 Medical care – the schools takes care of medical bills but is working with IHK and AAR to come up with a medical scheme.

 Sixty days maternity after probation period

 In – House training after probation. It is a Diploma course on Early Childhood.

 Transport on the school bus. Though it may not reach her home, but rather at a closest point as possible.

3.3 Supervisor: 2 Will most likely be the Deputy Head, Ms. Lois Uigi.

4. Job Support:

Carol welcomed job support. She was particularly enthusiastic about having a male Job Support officer since most of the teachers are female. On learning that he is disabled, she was further excited because it would be good for the children.

5. Reasonable accommodation:

Esther’s disability does not require physical accommodation.

6. Financial Incentive:

 At the current rate of 2,200UGX, the calculation of the 700 USD for Esther’s placement gave a figure of 1,540,000 UGX.

 One million (1,000,000 UGX) would be contributed to Esther’s two months net salary (500,000 UGX for each month). The rest of the 540,000 UGX would be spent on training.

 Suggested trainings were:

o The British Council Accreditation –Cambridge course for beginners (compulsory) – it costs about 20 pounds

o Completion of Esther’s computer course which she is currently pursuing.

o Basic Guidance and Counseling:-Learn yourself. This was especially because Carol noted that Esther was a bit shy. The course also teaches social issues and how to deal with children.

7. Conclusion:

The meeting with Carol was successful; though we look forward the job description from where the Job Support Officer (Michael ) will take over with supporting Esther.

3
