<p> Guided Reading in Grades 3-6</p><p>Before Reading: Tune in to the Text  Read and talk about title  Discuss what is already known about topic and how that will influence reading  Check out cover and read blurb on back of book to make predictions  Determine type of text it is and discuss any clues about how author will present info.  Predict and/or investigate the text features and/or graphics  Discuss any unusual, difficult, or technical vocabulary  Discuss how the form of the text will help with reading it  Skim and scan the text to gather information by reading headings, subheadings, etc.  Generate questions raised in the readers’ minds by previewing the text  Discuss strategies you want readers to use  Determine the purpose for reading the text</p><p>During Reading:  Discuss info. reader gathers from text  Inquire what is new info. and confirm what reader already knew  Discuss the most useful or interesting info. read so far  Clarify confusing or difficult parts or vocabulary  Discuss pace, phrasing, and fluency of the reading  Discuss interpretation of graphic elements  Encourage the use of fix-up strategies for comprehension and/or unfamiliar words  Prompt for use of strategic action to problem-solve while reading  Talk about types of words that cause the most problems</p><p>After Reading:  Interpret and respond to the meaning of the text  Locate, reread, and talk about most important part, interesting, or useful pieces of info.  Revisit the text to provide evidence of ideas and understandings discussed  Discuss prereading questions that were answered or unanswered, and new questions  Locate, reread, and talk about sections that caused confusion or needed deeper thinking  Problem-solve or clarify unusual, technical, or difficult vocabulary  Discuss use of reading strategies  Discuss the author’s purpose and whether sufficient info. was provided  Share favorite passage or sentence  Interpret visual graphics such as charts, maps, and diagrams  Analyze the features and/or discuss whether the format suits the topic and purpose of text  Discuss how else the story/info. could have been presented  Discuss the accuracy of the info. and any evidence of bias  Determine if additional reading is desired or needed on the topic or by the author -From Guided Reading in Grades 3-6 by Mary Browning Schulman (Scholastic) page 58 Informal Anecdotal Reading Notes (During the Reading) Name: ______</p><p>Date: ______</p><p>Tell me about what you have been reading:</p><p>Read this part for me.
