Programme Structures and Requirements, Levels, Modules, Credits and Awards

The Foundation Degree in Business and Administration for Health and Social Care is a collaborative project between the Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) of the Universities at Medway; University of Kent (UoK), Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) (the Primary Administering University (PAU), and the University of Greenwich(UoG). The HEI’s have worked with local employers, and administration and clerical groups, to design a programme which meets the needs of the local community.

Students participating on the programme will be allocated to the one of the participating Universities. Those students allocated to the University of Kent will receive their final Foundation Degree award from the University of Kent. Meanwhile, to ensure parity of experience, the students will be registered with all CCCU, for all purposes, other a receiving the final award. A project Programme Director will be appointed by CCCU(the PAU), with UOG and UOK identifying their Programme Directors for the FD, who will act as the focal point for the students allocated to that particular institution and participate on the Programme Management Team.

CCCU, as the PAU, will be responsible for the validation, approval and review of the programme. However, all three HEI’s are jointly and singly responsible for the quality and standard of the award on which the students are registered. CCCU policies and procedures regarding quality assurance will be followed. An annual quality report will be produced conjointly by the Programme Management Team and all the HEI Programme Directors will ensure that appropriate responses are made to any areas identified for action within their HEI.

All assessment and examinations associated with the programme will follow the regulations and conventions of CCCU, this will include assessment procedures and materials (marking arrangements and assessment grids). These arrangements are underpinned in the Memorandum of Agreement and the document’s supporting Annex. A Memorandum of Understanding with National Health Service Medway (NHSM) outlines their role within the programme.

The overall structure of the programme recognises a strong vocational philosophy. Successful completion of Levels 4 and 5 will lead to the award of Foundation Degree for Business and Administration in Health and Social Care. Students who are awarded the Foundation Degree in Business and Administration in Health and Social Care automatically gain access to Level 6 of the BSc/BA in Applied Professional practice at the University of Kent (BSc Inter-professional Learning Programme at CCCU or Applied Professional Studies at the UoG).

The duration of the programme over two year’s part time (up to a maximum five years) using a blended learning approach. The number credits required to achieve the Foundation Degree is 240 credits (120 level 4, 120 level 5). ECTS 120 credits (60 level 4, 60 level 5).

The structure of the programme achieves a balance between work-based and academic learning. It is designed to place significant value on the accreditation of students’ experience in the workplace, supported by part time attendance on taught modules.

The programme requires students to complete 120 level 4 credits and 120 level 5 credits. Currently for the Foundation Degree in Business and Administration in Health and Social Care the six level 4 modules are listed below and are core and the four level 5 modules are core with a choice of one of two elective modules. Work-Based Learning Where relevant to the programme of study, provide details of any work-based learning element, inclusive of employer details, delivery, assessment and support for students.

The work-based learning element of this programme is underpinned by the Code of Practice for the Assurance of Academic Quality and Standards in Higher Education September 2007 Section 9.

The work-based learning element within the programme primarily requires the student to demonstrate work-based reflections (WBRs). Academic study and assessment are combined to produce WBR. This process includes regular discussions which will take place in the workplace, between the student and the employer, through the appointed Work-Based Learning Facilitator (WBLF).

The purpose of WBRs is to enhance work-based practice and consider new ways of working. NHS Medway (NHSM) has a WBLF who supports student learning in the work- place so that the students are facilitated to achieve the learning outcomes for their programme of study. The WBLF will:

 Be a practitioner with at least 2 years experience of working in the participant’s pathway of study.  Be willing to undertake the role.  Receive an induction from the PAU about the student’s programme of study.  Meet regularly with the students; ensure they are given opportunity to complete the workplace reflection.

Students are expected to record and reflect on work based discussions and any actions taken, this is then supported with an overall comment from the WBLF, forming an integral part of the assessment process.

A Work-based Learning Contract (LC) and Work-place Agreement will be drawn up between the student, the personal tutor and the WBLF. These contracts are a formal document in which all parties agree on roles and responsibilities e.g. an employer may commitment to the student’s day-release from work; the WBLF to providing resources for the student necessary realise the desired learning opportunities; the personal tutor agrees to support the students by undertaking liaison visits to the workplace; students commit to remaining in employment for the duration of the programme.

The assessment and examinations associated with the programme will follow the Regulations and Conventions of CCCU. This includes the employer, through the WBLF, and the student discussing and signing a learning agreement, a process a known as a “monitoring check”. This is the main vehicle for evidencing work-based learning.

For the University of Kent students, tutors employed by UoK will provide individual support and advise students during tutorials of ways to improve the quality of WBRs and individual practice.

Any student who is unable to demonstrate WBRs will liaise with their employer through the UoK Programme Director. The UoK Centre for Professional Practice’s Educational and Guidance Officer (E&GO) will act as an advocate, providing continual feedback from NHSM and student to the Centre of Professional Practice FD Programme Team.

The work-based learning strategy is designed to ensure that students are not disadvantaged through lack of access to work-based support, in so much as the emphases on work-based learning is about developing reflection on work-based practice. Throughout the programme students will have access to learning resources such as:  Individual tutorials, action learning sets, seminars and group activities formal lectures and presentations.  Education and Guidance Learning Advisor (Centre for Professional Practice).  Virtual Learning Environment which support and enable learners to access University learning resources off-campus.

15.
