COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a challenging yet relaxing fitness class focusing heavily on proper alignment and breathing techniques. These exercises will increase your total body flexibility, balance, and strength while cultivating a sense of well-being through focused breathing and active meditation. You will notice improved posture, stamina, and often a decrease in existing back/neck pain. Some knowledge of Yoga or Pilates, or a moderate level of physical fitness will increase your success in this class. We occasionally focus on student-requested areas such as upper body strength, tight hamstrings, etc.</p><p>II. COURSE MATERIALS Yoga mat or thick towel. Optionally you may choose to bring block(s), strap, or additional towel(s) for support.</p><p>III. COURSE OBJECTIVES With hands-on classroom instruction and extensive verbal coaching, students will develop a deeper understanding of the benefits of yoga on overall health. Increased flexibility, balance, and strength will be achieved by practicing and perfecting poses while standing, sitting, lying, and twisting. 1. Review and refine standing poses such as Mountain, Warrior I, II, and III, Tree, Forward Fold, Chair, etc. 2. Review and refine sitting poses such as Staff, Straddle Fold, Head to Knee, Tailor, Camel, etc. 3. Review and refine lying poses such as Cobra, Locust, Half Fish, Roll Up, Bridge, Bow, etc. 4. Review and refine twisting poses such as Revolved Triangle, Chair Twist, Seated Three Twist, etc.</p><p>IV. COURSE OUTLINE BY WEEK 1 – Student Documentation, Yoga Overview (styles, benefits, modifications, breathing), Course Outline (Sunrise->Morning->Midday->Afternoon->Sunset), Demonstrate Routine, Practice Active Meditation 2 – 21 Begin with Breathing and Focus Techniques. Transition to Warming and Heat Building of Muscles And Joints. Proceed to strength and balance poses. Reference to standing and twisting poses, such as Sun Salutation, Warriors, Chair, Tree, Revolved Triangle, etc. Transition to sitting and lying poses, such as Staff, Straddle Fold, Seated Three Twist, Half Fish, Bridge, etc. Explore new and challenging techniques for Poses, etc. Transition to active meditation.</p><p>V. STUDENT EVALUATION Students will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis with attendance and participation required for a passing grade. Instructor will observe student participation in order to determine if they have learned the necessary techniques of Yoga as listed in the course objectives to be able to use it effectively at an intermediate level.
