A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 24, 2011, As Literacy Day at the Capitol, and Honoring

SESS. 11 RS BR 1361</p><p>A RESOLUTION recognizing February 24, 2011, as Literacy Day at the Capitol, and honoring the staffs of the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development and the Reading Recovery Program for their efforts to promote literacy and address the diverse needs of all learners through research and professional development. WHEREAS, the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development was established in 1998, with a goal of providing high quality professional development and research for the improvement of literacy achievement beginning in, early childhood and continuing through adulthood; and WHEREAS, the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development, located in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky, has supported and expanded the Reading Recovery Program, an intensive, short-term, early intervention program designed to provide one-on-one instruction for first grade students having difficulty learning to read and write; and WHEREAS, in 2001, the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development established the Reading Recovery University Training Center; and WHEREAS, Dr. Judy Embry, University Training Center Director, and Lindy Harmon, Statewide Teacher Leader, provide a year-long initial training program for teachers to become Reading Recovery Program teacher leaders; and WHEREAS, following initial training, teacher leaders return to their local school districts and train classroom teachers to deliver individualized instruction in the Reading Recovery program to the lowest achieving first grade students; and WHEREAS, Reading Recovery has been recognized by the What Works Clearinghouse as the only intervention program to meet all criteria for effective early reading intervention by the federal government; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:</p><p>Page 1 of 2 BR136100.100 - 1361 - 3167 Jacketed UNOFFICIAL COPY AS OF 04/08/18 11 REG. The members of the Senate do hereby recognize February 24, 2011, as Literacy Day at the Capitol, and commend the staffs of the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development and the Reading Recovery Program for their efforts to improve the literacy levels of all citizens of the Commonwealth.</p><p> Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to Dr. George G.
