Title, number of pages and language(s) of the notified document: Draft Amendment of Regulation 283 Salt, Regulation 284 Table Salt and Regulation 285 Iodised Table Salt or Iodised Salt of the Food Regulations 1985</p><p>6. Description of content: Regulation 283 Salt and Regulation 284 Table Salt: The proposed draft amendment requires that all salt that are imported, manufactured for sale, sold, exposed or offered for sale, consigned or delivered for household use and for human consumption must be iodised. Only potassium iodide or potassium iodate is permitted to be added in a proportion equivalent to not less than 20 mg/kg and not more than 40 mg/kg of iodine.</p><p>7. Objective and rationale, including the nature of urgent problems where applicable: 1. To ensure only iodised salt and iodised table salt are used for human consumption in Malaysia to overcome the Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). 2. National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Survey 2008 found that more than 50% of school children aged 8-10 years old in Malaysia had urinary iodine level below the normal level set by the WHO (100-199 µg/litre). International recommendations particularly by WHO/UNICEF/ICIDD show Universal Salt Iodisation (USI) is the most effective method to eliminate the IDD problem.</p><p>8.
