To Practice Good Lab Techniques

Title Film Canister Chemistry

Purpose To practice good lab techniques To develop sound observational strategies To gain some experience using Logger Pro as a graphing tool.

Materials SAFETY GOGGLES, effervescent tablet, film canister, lid, water, graduated cylinder, stop watch, paper towels

Procedure 1. Practice putting on the lid of the canister to make sure you can hear it snap closed.

2. Using a graduated cylinder, carefully place 5.0 mL of water in the film canister. Record this volume in your data table.

3. Drop the tablet into the canister with water, and immediately snap the lid onto the canister.

4. Press start on the stop watch, and simultaneously flip the canister over onto its top, placing it on the paper towel.

6. Press stop on the stop watch when the canister pops open. Record this time in your data table.

7. In your data table, write general observations about the reaction and what took place.

8. Repeat steps 1-7 for 10.0 ml, 15.0 ml, 20.0 ml, and 25.0 mL of water. Use a new tablet each time.

Data Organize your group’s observations on your own paper. You should create a data table to tabulate the quantitative and qualitative data for this lab.

Graph Use Logger Pro to construct a graph which plots time vs. volume. For this lab, which variable is the independent variable? Which is the dependent variable? Make sure that you give the graph a title and that you label the x and y axes appropriately.

Conclusion Questions 1. Examine the graph you created. What does the graph tell you? Are you able to make any definitive statements regarding the relationship between the volume of the water used and the time of the pop.

2. What questions are raised by this lab? Write at least five different questions in your lab.

3. Why do you think the canister popped?
